Job Summary
Position Summary :
The Director of Special Education will lead and manage all special education services within the district to ensure equitable access to a high-quality education for students with disabilities. This includes oversight of instructional programs, compliance with state and federal regulations, supervision of special education staff, and the development and implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). The Director will also coordinate and supervise the district's Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) and Response to Intervention (RTI) framework to ensure effective academic, behavioral, and social-emotional supports for all students. The Director promotes inclusive practices, supports school-based teams, and ensures continuous improvement through data-driven decision-making.

Qualifications :
- Master's degree from a regionally accredited college or university
- Professional leadership certificate issued by the Alabama State Department of Education prior to starting date
- At least five years of successful teaching and / or leadership experience in special education, administration, or related areas
- Demonstrated knowledge of federal and state laws related to student discipline, attendance, and equity (e.g., Title IX, IDEA, ADA, compulsory attendance laws)
- Fingerprint clearance with the Alabama State Department of Education prior to the start date
Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
Direct all special education programs and services and serve as the primary contact for mediation, due process, and state complaintsSupervise special education staff, including coordinators, teachers, therapists, and paraprofessionals to ensure service deliveryEnsure compliance with IDEA, Section 504, and all relevant state and federal mandatesDevelop, monitor, and evaluate the implementation of IEPs and 504 PlansCoordinate the district-wide MTSS and RTI processes to ensure effective tiered interventions for all studentsGuide school teams in analyzing data and determining appropriate student interventionsProvide guidance and technical assistance to school leaders and teachersCoordinate child find efforts and ensure timely evaluation and re-evaluation of students suspected of having disabilitiesPrepare required reports for the Alabama State Department of Education and the Board of EducationLead professional learning for staff regarding best practices in special education, inclusive instruction, MTSS implementation, etc.Monitor special education and student support budgets and ensure effective use of resourcesCollaborate with general education, federal programs, and student services departments to align supportsPerform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent of EducationRequired Skills and Competencies :
