Substitutes serve as temporary employees and assume responsibility for all aspects of the learning environment, including supervising students, managing student behavior, and ensuring continuity of learning in the absence of the employee. The substitute communicates effectively with students, staff, and the public.
Roles And Responsibilities
- Adheres to and administers curriculum provided by Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) or provided lesson plans created by the absent employee.
- Observes, follows, and understands LCPS policies, procedures, and expectations.
- Provides direction and supervision to students at all times, ensuring their safety and educational goals are a priority during the assignment.
- Be flexible to teach various subjects at different grade levels and remain confident, comfortable, and professional while providing the appropriate level of classroom management in order to meet the varying needs of the students and school staff.
- Works and builds positive relationships with students, staff, administrators, and community to create a positive student environment.
- Provides feedback to the absent employee at the conclusion of each assignment with a summary that includes lessons covered, incidents that may have occurred, student questions, etc.
- Site-based substitutes are assigned to a single location and are expected to report daily. They are utilized by school staff to fill open short-term substitute assignments. They implement employee-created lessons and instruct students across content areas and classrooms.
- Long-term substitute teachers are utilized when substitute assignments exceed 10 consecutive days. The responsibilities of the long-term substitute may include lesson planning, developing and grading assessments, delivering instruction, and communicating and conferencing with parents, staff, and administrators.

Qualifications

Holds a current or an expired state-issued teaching license or is eligible for a teaching license via an accredited university or college.Education
Experience with being a lead teacher / instructor / professor of adults or children preferred.Experience teaching or training adults or children in a non-classroom public school environment is preferred (i.e., classroom / school / community volunteer, preschool instructor, coach, and / or childcare provider).Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of effective classroom management strategies is preferred.Ability to follow oral and written directives and communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents in English.Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly talking, expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. The employee must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly. The employee must possess normal cognitive abilities including the ability to learn, recall and apply certain practices and policies. Frequently sitting and / or remaining in a stationary position for long periods of time. Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and / or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
Terms of Employment
Substitutes are employed on an at-will basis and are not considered contractual employees.
Substitute Compensation
Daily Substitute Rate - $19.29 an hour or $135.03 a day for a 7-hour dayDaily Loyalty Substitute Rate (25+ assignments)- $21.43 an hour or $150.01 a day for a 7-hour daySite-Based Substitute Rate- $22.00 an hour for $154.00 a day for a 7-hour dayLong-Term Substitute Teacher Rate- $28.57 an hour or $200.00 a day for a 7-hour dayOther long-term assignments have varying rates based upon the job assignment.Equal Opportunity Employment
