Job Summary : The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) is a member of the Anesthesia care team and, under the supervision of an anesthesiologist or other qualified physician, participates in rendering anesthetic services. The CRNA reports to the supervising physician for anesthesia services and all patient care activities. These activities include those which involve direct patient care such as surgical anesthesia and pain management and those which involve indirect patient care such as care of and ordering anesthesia equipment, supplies, and other duties deemed necessary.
Qualifications :
The basic required basic qualifications for the CRNA applicant for clinical privileges shall include the following :
A current, unencumbered license as a registered nurse in Tennessee or a recognized multistate licensure with privilege to practice in TennesseeA current, unencumbered license as an advanced practice nurse in the state of TennesseeCompletion of Nurse Anesthesia program accredited at time of completionCompletion of preparation at the master's or doctoral level in a nursing specialtyA master's degree or higher is not required if :National certification in anesthesia and licensure in Tennessee as a registered nurse was obtained prior to July 1, 2005; orNational certification in anesthesia and licensure as a registered nurse with the multistate licensure privilege to practice in Tennessee was obtained prior to July 1, 2005 andAwaiting initial certification or maintenance of continuous certification as a Certified Registered NurseAnesthetist by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA)Performing and documenting a pre-anesthetic assessment and evaluation of the patient, including requesting consultations and diagnostic studies, selecting, obtaining, ordering and administering pre-anesthetic medications and fluids; and obtaining consent for anesthesia.Developing and implementing an anesthetic plan including general, regional, local and sedation.Selecting, applying and inserting appropriate monitoring modalities for continuous patient evaluation.Selecting and administering the anesthetics, adjuvant and accessory drugs and fluids deemed necessary to manage the anesthetic.Managing a patient's airway and pulmonary status using current practice modalities and guidelines.Facilitating emergence and recovery from anesthesia by appropriate selection and administration of medications, fluids and ventilation support.Discharging the patient from the post-anesthesia care area and provide post-anesthesia follow-up and care.Implementing pain management modalities.Responding to emergency situations by providing airway management, administration of emergency drugs, and using basic or advanced cardiac life support techniques.Participating in quality and performance improvement, educational and research efforts.Participating in departmental, institutional, and organizational committees as assigned.Completion of any other duties as assignedDuties and Responsibilities :
The CRNA's scope of practice includes, but is not limited to the following :
