Duties listed in order of importance. Incumbent may perform some or all of the following or other related duties.Provide professional nursing care to individuals in a student health unit, state-operated facility, or corrections setting.Observe, assess, and document symptoms, patient reactions, and progress for infirmary and / or clinic patients.Conduct nursing rounds; take and record vital signs.Prepare and administer medications, treatments, immunizations, and prescribed care plans.Monitor restrained or isolated patients every 15 minutes and provide immediate emergency care (first aid, hospital transport coordination, physician notifications, medical counseling).If assigned, schedule, assign, and review work of lower-level nursing staff (RNs, LPNs); may approve / disapprove leave requests or complete performance evaluations.Participate in staff development and training; review care plans; train and orient new employees.Alternate Role (Corrections Medical Center)Responsible for total healthcare of 20–60 bedridden inmates.Perform full rounds, evaluate care needs, develop and review care plans.Administer all medications including narcotics; deliver all required direct care.Perform specialized procedures such as IV therapy, chemotherapy, wound care, oxygen therapy, dialysis, blood transfusions, incubation, CPR, tube feeding, catheterization, suctioning, and phlebotomy.Additional ResponsibilitiesOrganize and oversee the “Code Blue” team.Direct healthcare staff (aides, LPNs); act as lead worker on assigned shift when Nurse 2 is absent.Assist physicians in diagnostic evaluations.Clerical & Administrative DutiesChart and record medications, treatments, and all pertinent medical information.Complete required documentation (incident / accident reports, Medicaid documentation).Order supplies and equipment; maintain exact inventory of controlled drugs and medical assets.Arrange outpatient appointments, medical exams, and prescription fulfillment with local pharmacies.Serve as liaison to other departments; attend and / or conduct meetings; participate in problem-solving teams.Occasionally serve as an instructor.
