The current vacancies are in the Public Works department. The eligibility list created by these vacancies may be used to hire other vacancies in the department. To perform manual labor and operate hand tools, motorized hand operated equipment and motor vehicles less than 10K pounds GVWR including vehicle-trailer combinations in the construction, maintenance and repair of roads and highways; and to perform all other duties as assigned.

Repair and maintain road and highway surfaces using shovels, asphalt rakes, grade stakes, brooms, air compressors, and jack hammers.

Repair and maintain right-of-way areas by removing brush, tree limbs and rubbish, spreading crushed rock, shaping ditches, spreading black dirt and laying sod.

Remove snow by shoveling crosswalks, intersections, bridge walks, and drains and by operating snowplows and sanding trucks.

Control traffic by setting barricades, cones, and arrow boards and by using hand signals and flags, in order to ensure the safety of highway workers and motorists, and to ensure that traffic moves with a minimum amount of congestion.

Construct and repair spillways, curbs, guardrails, storm drains, and culverts, by using cement mixers, curbing machines, wrenches, shovels, jack hammers, stakes and tapes.

Clean and maintain equipment, power tools and hand tools.

Make minor repairs to equipment on the job.

Education : High School Diploma or equivalent. Experience : None. Substitutions : None. Certifications / Licensure : A valid Minnesota driver's license. Positions in this job class are subject to drug and alcohol testing pursuant to Department of Transportation rules and Ramsey County regulations. Testing negative is a condition of employment. Other : As required by the FMCSA, once you have accepted a job offer you will be required to register for the Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse and consent to a full query of your Clearinghouse record. Highway Maintenance Laborers will be required to obtain their CDL permit within 30 days of their first day of employment. Must obtain their CDL Class A license within their one-year probationary period.

The examination process will consist of the following section with each section weighted as indicated : Training and Experience Rating = 100%. The examination for Highway Maintenance Laborer will consist of a minimum qualifications screening and a training and experience rating, comprised of the questions in the attached supplemental questionnaire. Not all applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will pass the training and experience rating. The rating on this supplemental questionnaire will depend on your answers to the questions do not mark "see resume" or "see work history" as a response. Please answer all your questions clearly and completely. Failure to respond could affect your score and final rank on this examination. The names of all applicants who properly completed and submitted an application and passed the examination / screening process shall be placed on the Rule of 10 eligible list for an employment opportunity as Highway Maintenance Laborer. Candidates will remain on the list for 60 days or until hired, whichever occurs first. Veteran's Preference points will be applied after a candidate passes the examination process.
