Lead Custodian
The Position
Bargaining Unit : Local 856 - General Services & Maintenance Unit
Contra Costa County Public Works Department’s Custodial Services Division provides cleaning services to nearly 60 county buildings with a total area of over 1.
35 million square feet. The Custodial Services Division is one of 18 divisions in the Public Works Department that provide services to other County departments and the general public.
Lead Custodians within our department work together to provide lead direction to roughly 50 Custodians assigned to buildings throughout the County.
This position is located in Downtown Martinez, but travel throughout the County occurs on a daily basis.
The Contra Costa County Public Works Department is recruiting to fill one (1) vacancy in the Lead Custodian classification.

What you will typically be responsible for :
- Instructing, training, and directing the work of custodial staff working in various buildings throughout the County
- Working with vendors, staff, and customer departments to ensure individual service-level agreements are fulfilled
- Performing various custodial tasks including sweeping, mopping, removing trash, performing minor repairs, and other tasks related to custodial services
- Receiving and assigning various work orders and identifying the best solution to meet customer needs
- Operating a County vehicle and driving to and from multiple locations on a daily basis

License Required : Possession of valid California Motor Vehicle Operators License. Out of state valid motor vehicle operator’s license will be accepted during the application process.
Experience : Two years full-time (or equivalent) custodial experience in a commercial, industrial, or public agency which included the use of industrial vacuums, buffers, and rug cleaning equipment.
Desirable Qualifications :
- Experience working in custodial services for a public agency
- Experience leading employees in a manual labor environment
- Experience in operating equipment used in custodial services
Selection Process

- Application Evaluation : Depending on the number of applications received, an Application Evaluation Board may be convened to evaluate and select the best-qualified candidates for invitation to the next phase of the examination.
- HireVue Interview : An oral assessment (interview) will be conducted to measure candidates' competencies as they relate to the job.
In the assessment, candidates must achieve an average passing score of 70% or higher on each of the competencies and an overall passing score of 70% or higher.
These may include, but are not limited to : Decision Making, Adaptability, Attention to Detail, Self-Management, and Informing. (Weighted 100%).
