Description
The Southwest Cancer Center oncology clinic is a hospital based comprehensive department providing individualized cancer care to adult and pediatric oncology patients. Specialty clinics include head and neck cancers, breast cancers, GI cancers, lung cancers, BMT cancers, GYN cancers and pediatric cancers. Other specialty clinics include surgical breast care and hematological disorders. The clinic nurses are experienced in cancer care including chemotherapy regimens and supportive care. Nurses collaborate with many different disciplines including : physical therapy, speech pathology, dieticians, social workers and psychology counselors. The department is team- oriented and has been successful in providing our patients with superior quality and outstanding customer service. The unit is an ideal place for nurses looking to specialize in oncology care by optimizing their clinical expertise, time management, and critical thinking skills.

Unit specific orientation is in addition to UMC’s General Hospital Orientation and General Nursing Orientation
Orientation consists of observation, classroom, and clinical hours over a 6-8 week period depending on experience.
During clinical orientation you will be paired with an experienced nurse preceptor. The preceptor is chosen to best fit your personality and learning style.
Chemotherapy testing and certification is required within 3 months of employment.
Enrollment in the first available chemotherapy class and BMT class is mandatory with annual competency training.
Professional growth and development opportunities are available and encouraged including : committee participation, educational, and leadership advancement. Committees are available at unit level as well as hospital wide.
Education is available weekly through Breast care tumor board and general tumor board in addition to fellowship didactics
Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing
Minimum of (2) years of experience in clinical nursing
Oncology experience preferred
Current CPR certification from American Heart Association.
Customer service abilities including effective listening skills.
Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work in a fast paced environment.
Ability to perform work that requires walking, sitting and standing most of the time while on duty. Occasional lifting or patients with assistance is required.
