Butler County Schools Bus Driver

Butler County Schools is seeking a Bus Driver. The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma or equivalent, a valid Alabama Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsement, and a minimum of five years licensed driving experience. Certification as a school bus driver by Alabama SDE and completion of drug, alcohol, and background screening are also required.

Knowledge of highway and traffic safety, ability to operate light and / or heavy-duty buses in a safe and economical way, and the ability to understand and carry out both written and oral directions are essential. The candidate should also be able to exercise appropriate disciplinary techniques, follow a daily routing schedule, and relate and communicate effectively with parents, students, and school personnel. The ability to tolerate highly stressful situations is also necessary.

The Bus Driver reports to the Transportation Coordinator and is responsible for transporting students in a safe, efficient, and timely manner. The driver will comply with all state and local laws relative to bus transportation, observe all safety regulations for school buses, and maintain discipline of students. Additional duties include fueling the bus, keeping the bus clean, following assigned routes and schedules, and recommending changes to the supervisor. The driver must also complete pre-trip safety inspections and notify proper authority of mechanical defects and lateness. Discharge students only at authorized stops, transport only authorized students, ensure no smoking, drinking, or eating on the bus, and instruct students in safety precautions and practices. Conduct bus evacuation as required and be aware of additional duties related to transportation of special education students.

The physical requirements include medium work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and / or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and / or up to 10 pounds of force as needed to move objects. Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the System's approved compensation plan, and the length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the System. Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of personnel.
