Job Description

About Us : The South Burlington WWTP was put into service in 1968 and most recently upgraded in 2013. It has the capacity to treat 12 million gallons per day (MGD) of domestic and industrial sewage. The treatment facility uses a biological process to separate organic matter from the water. Water is disinfected by the addition of chlorine and dechlorinated before being discharged into the Big Alamance Creek just upstream of its confluence with the Haw River.

What You Will Do : An employee in this role performs semi-skilled manual labor to maintain water and wastewater facilities and grounds. Responsibilities include general landscaping, equipment maintenance, patching pipes and pavement, and keeping the facilities clean, safe, and sanitary. The employee also drives a City truck, loads and unloads supplies, sprays weed killer, directs traffic, and performs janitorial tasks. This position requires a higher level of knowledge and independence compared to the Maintenance Worker I role, as employees are expected to perform tasks with minimal supervision.

Examples of Duties

Valve Operation & Maintenance :

  • Checks the operation of water and wastewater valves by manually turning them on and off with a valve key or wrench
  • Reports valve replacement needs to the supervisor for timely action

Painting & Equipment Care :

  • Paints equipment and buildings to maintain facility aesthetics and protect surfaces from wear
  • Excavation & Paving :

  • Digs, patches, and backfills pavement or grounds, utilizing tools such as shovels, dump trucks, jackhammers, and tamps
  • Main Break Repairs :

  • Assists with the repair of water and wastewater main breaks, including digging pavement, cutting or clamping pipes, and backfilling
  • Supply Management :

  • Handles deliveries and stocks supplies to ensure the availability of materials for ongoing work
  • Driving & Hauling :

  • Operates dump trucks to transport debris or mud to and from worksites for backfilling purposes
  • Landscaping & Grounds Maintenance :

  • Performs general landscaping tasks, including mowing with riding and push mowers, trimming and pruning trees and shrubs, and cutting down trees
  • Snow Removal & Ice Control :

  • Shovels snow from sidewalks and applies ice-melting materials to maintain safety during winter conditions
  • Plant Maintenance & Cleaning :

  • Cleans and washes bar screens, scum boxes, weirs, and sand filter screens
  • Treats sludge, flushes and checks underground pumps, and records readings and measurements at water and wastewater plants
  • Facility Cleanliness :

  • Empties trash and recycling containers to maintain cleanliness
  • Mops and cleans floors, offices, hallways, and restrooms
  • Safety Measures :

  • Sets up wet floor signs to prevent slips and falls
  • Water Sampling Support :

  • Assists lab assistants with gathering distribution of water samples for testing
  • General Assistance :

  • Performs related duties as required to support ongoing operations and maintenance
  • Qualifications

    General Maintenance Knowledge :

  • Solid understanding of general maintenance tasks performed in water and wastewater treatment plants, including the upkeep of plant infrastructure and surrounding areas
  • Equipment Operation Skills :

  • Proficient in operating a variety of equipment, including mowers, tractors, dump trucks, leaf blowers, forklifts, chainsaws, weed eaters, tampers, jackhammers, and other maintenance tools to ensure efficient operations
  • Landscaping & Groundskeeping Expertise :

  • Skilled in seeding, straw application, and fertilization to enhance plant aesthetics and functionality
  • Expertise in mowing, shoveling, raking, and maintaining clean, safe, and professional workspaces
  • Ability to set up and maintain proper signage to ensure safety and inform the public of crew activity
  • Minimum Qualifications :

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalency and some work experience in general maintenance work, preferably in a water treatment plant, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Preferred Qualifications :

  • Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

    Physical Requirements and Working Conditions :

  • Work in this class is described as medium and frequently requires physical exertion to complete tasks and move objects.
  • Work typically involves the ability to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, hearing and repetitive motions.
  • The employee is required to have the visual acuity to be the operator of trucks, forklifts, cranes, and other equipment.
  • Employee is subject to hazards including physical conditions with proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, exposure to chemicals, noise, and atmospheric conditions.
  • Working conditions include both inside and outside environmental conditions.
