QUALIFICATIONS :
Required : Excellent IV therapy skills; Ability to work well as part of the interdisciplinary team in the treatment and care of
sick and / or terminally ill patients and their families.
Preferred : Preferred knowledge of chemotherapy drugs; experience working with cancer patients and their families.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL / MENTAL DEMANDS :
Medium to high physical and mental demand capabilities required. Must be able to work independently as well as with co-
workers and patients / family members.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS :
- Demonstrates a professional, courteous, caring and understanding attitude toward patients, family members, visitors, physicians and fellow employees.
- Knows and observes rules and regulations for safe administration of chemotherapy drugs, for safety to self, personnel, patients / family members and environment.
- Works under the general direction of the Medical oncologist and in cooperation with the Clinical Manager / Director of the Cancer Treatment Center.
- Provides education and information to the patient and family, helping to make the care seamless, continuous and comprehensive.
- Partners with patients, families, the interdisciplinary team, and community resources to provide well coordinated, timely, compassionate, exemplary, interdisciplinary care.
- Supports the patient during difficult decision-making periods. Assists in coordination of end of life care for patient and family, and provide emotional support.
- Understands the side effects of chemotherapy. Assesses patient symptoms and teaches management of side effects under the directions of the Medical Oncologist.
- Assesses patient and family needs in regard to physical, emotional and social aspects of their disease and / or treatments. Counsels when appropriate and refers when necessary to other hospital services or community agencies.
