Summary :

Participates in providing high quality patient care for our patients and families through assisting the RN. Performs duties under the direction of a registered nurse. Primary role is providing constant visual observation (CVO) for high-risk patients. While providing CVO, the PCT Specialized will be following the plan of care for the patient as outlined by the RN and keeping the assigned patient under continuous observation at all times, including during transport and while using the bathroom. The Specialized Patient Care Technician will also be expected to perform additional patient care activities as organization and patient needs demand.

Responsibilities :

  • The Specialized PCT participates in providing high quality patient care, with a primary focus on providing continuous observation and monitoring for high-risk patients. The Specialized PCT will also be expected to perform care activities outside of continuous observation as necessary to meet patient needs.
  • Responsibilities for continuous observation and monitoring for high-risk patients (expected majority of time) include : In collaboration with the patient care team, ensures the patient environment is free of obstacles and minimizes risk of falls and accidental or intentional self-harm. Assumes the role of patient safety / direct observation staff for psychiatric or medical patients when necessary either on psychiatric or non-psychiatric units such as medical / surgical floors, PICU, or the Emergency Department. PCT Specialized roles will care for children including activities of daily living, maintaining a safe environment, and the management of harmful behaviors. Maintains safe environment for patient by performing constant observation. Accompanies patient when leaving unit. Utilizes safety devices (bed rails, wheel locks). Responsible for communicating and escalating with the patients assigned nurse and care team regarding any patient changes, or if patient condition changes from baseline. While performing constant observation, provides diversionary activities such as reading, play, TV. Orients patient to person, time and place, as needed.
  • Responsibilities for additional care activities outside of continuous observation and monitoring (expected to be smaller portion of time) include : Prepare rooms for patient admission with appropriate equipment and supplies based on age and needs of patient; perform basic patient care tasks including baths, vital signs, positioning, ambulating, appropriate disposal of hazardous waste, and documentation of intake / output or other tasks delegated by the registered nurse (RN) within the scope of job duties. Has the ability to perform advanced patient care tasks if assigned by their respective areas (See addendum). Respond quickly to patient and family needs and problem solve appropriately in collaboration with the RN; maintain a safe patient environment at all times and transport stable patients to procedures or testing within the Children's Medical Center physical building requiring minimal therapy needs in addition to patient discharge. Assists in emergency situations as directed by an RN and in accordance with their training.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.

How You’ll Be Successful :

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • At least 1 year If not a student, 1 year of experience as a CNA, EMT, or Medical Assistant. Pref
  • If a student, must be actively enrolled in an accredited nursing program. Req
  • EDUCATION

  • High school diploma or equivalent Req
  • For non-nursing students, completion of a certified nurse assistant training, basic Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Paramedic or Medical Assistant program or equivalent Req
  • LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

  • Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers as required by CP 1.20 Life Support Course Requirements Req
