Job description

Position Summary

The Engineering Operations Manager oversees and manages the operations of the Engineering department, including maintenance, electrical, HVAC, and life support systems. The role focuses on accomplishing daily tasks and projects while fostering positive interdepartmental collaboration and external partnerships with vendors, contractors, and partners.

Essential Position Functions

  • Operate, manage, and utilize maintenance management software (Asset Essentials) to drive continuous improvement through data analysis to enhance processes and efficiency.
  • Manage workflow and work orders for all Engineering staff, ensuring work aligns with goals and requirements.
  • Delegate tasks to Department Leads and ensure timely completion.
  • Oversee third-party contractors and ensure engineering team presence for after-hours work.
  • Coordinate with vendors to ensure scheduled work does not disrupt guest experience or events.
  • Create a work environment that promotes teamwork, efficiency, productivity, recognition, and employee satisfaction, setting high standards for the department.
  • Monitor and maintain infrastructure needs, including HVAC, refrigeration, building automation, plumbing, electrical, masonry, carpentry, water systems, life support, and roofing.
  • Oversee maintenance of the Aquarium's property, including emergency repairs, preventative, and predictive maintenance, and coordinate with technicians.
  • Implement and maintain a preventative maintenance program complying with federal and state guidelines.
  • Coordinate staff training on equipment such as forklifts, boom lifts, and scissor lifts.
  • Develop and recommend cost-effective approaches supporting operations, including policies, procedures, programs, and budgets.
  • Manage projects as assigned by management.
  • Utilize CAD software (Vectorworks) for building space management and infrastructure planning.
  • Monitor building automation systems via web-based platforms.
  • Manage electronic documents related to facilities, including blueprints, inspections, and permits.
  • Transfer equipment operation manuals into the software database.
  • Conduct research for projects and equipment using manuals, experts, and online resources.
  • Produce reports, data analyses, and charts related to maintenance activities.
  • Assess staff needs for workspace management.
  • Evaluate facility systems for lifecycle needs and technological upgrades.
  • Prepare accurate project budgets and timelines.
  • Ensure compliance with code requirements and permit processes, including Fire, Building, Health, OSHA, AZA, USDA, and FWC regulations.
  • Maintain compliance with AZA Standards & Guidelines.
  • Manage external contractors on outsourced projects to ensure safety and compliance.
  • Foster interdepartmental collaboration to ensure animal health, welfare, and safety standards are met.
  • Deliver exceptional customer service to guests and internal stakeholders.
  • Support staff in decision-making and problem-solving to enhance guest experiences.
  • Participate in TFA's Conservation Day of Action annually.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the manager.

Education, Skills, and Abilities

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Business, or related field preferred.
  • 2-5 years of experience in commercial / industrial facility maintenance or related areas.
  • Proficient in CAD software (Vectorworks) and Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel.
  • Experience with computerized maintenance management software.
  • Strong communication and writing skills.
  • Familiarity with commercial and industrial equipment.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and coordinate with third-party contractors.

  • Typing on a computer keyboard, sitting for extended periods, occasional stooping and stair climbing, lifting up to 50 pounds, and travel as needed.
  • Flexibility to work weekends, evenings, holidays, and be on call for emergencies.
  • Outdoor work in Florida climate with exposure to temperature and humidity changes.
