Sioux Valley Energy is looking for a dedicated Manager of Safety to lead initiatives that build a strong safety culture. This is a critical role that reports directly to the General Manager / CEO and will develop and implement strategies to ensure safe work practices for employees, minimize the risk of on-the-job injuries, and create a culture of safety and care throughout the Cooperative. Responsible for coordinating public safety awareness programs, partnering with local organizations-such as fire departments, law enforcement, schools, and contractors-to educate the general public on electrical safety.
The ideal candidate will bring expertise in safety management, with an extensive understanding of industry standards (OSHA, ANSI, NESC, DOT), and a passion for promoting safety at every level. Strong communication skills, a collaborative mindset, and a commitment to enhancing both employee and public safety are essential for success in this role.
EDUCATION : High school diploma or equivalent required. Graduation from a technical school in power line studies is strongly preferred. Utility related field experience with extensive safety related experience. Closely related and progressive job experience and specialized technical training may substitute for educational requirements.
EXPERIENCE : Four years experience in electric utility industry preferred. Ability to effectively influence and communicate with others. Extensive experience in lieu of education may be considered.
JOB KNOWLEDGE : Maintains a high level of knowledge in all applicable safety codes as they pertain to the cooperative's business activities and any aspects that occur therein, including but not limited to the NESC, ANSI, and OSHA rules and regulations. Must have a thorough knowledge of first aid, CPR and AED training and obtain instructor certification.
ABILITIES AND SKILLS : Must possess excellent communication skills and ability to make effective public presentations. Ability to deal with all sorts of people is required. Must be able to handle multiple tasks at the same time. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and related computer applications. Must have a valid driver's license.
WORKING CONDITIONS : Primarily office work with approximately 25-35% of time observing the safety of line work. Work in varying weather conditions.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS : Work involves medium physical effort, including exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and / or up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Requires occasional lifting and carrying of 10–50 pounds, reaching and lifting overhead, standing, climbing, bending, pulling, and reaching. Approximately 25–35% of work is performed outdoors, with exposure to temperature variations from below 32°F to above 100°F. Minimal exposure to mechanical hazards and operating machinery. Use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is required in certain work areas. Must be able to communicate effectively, read, write, and perform basic arithmetic. Requires the ability to analyze data and reports, conduct research, coordinate people and resources, evaluate performance, and develop plans, procedures, and goals. Must be able to present information clearly and work effectively under stress. Valid driver's license required.
REPORTING LOCATION : Must be available to work at all service centers, as needed. Sioux Valley Energy's Service Centers are located in Colman, SD, Brandon, SD, Hartford, SD and Pipestone, MN.
