Provide clerical and secretarial services to the nursing unit assigned.

Responsibilities

Carries out the secretarial and clerical duties necessary for the efficient functioning of the nursing unit assigned.

• Communicates patient requests promptly to the nursing staff;
• Orders and charges for supplies and equipment;
• Schedules procedures and examinations with appropriate departments;
• Notifies consults when ordered (physicians, classes, etc.);
• Maintains the patient record and efficiently operates the computer system;

Processes patient classification data either manually or via computer.

Other duties as assigned.

Cannot pose a direct threat to health or safety of self or others. Must provide safe, efficient, competent care to customer or patient population assigned. Must demonstrate competency in the unit specific functions described in the performance continuum, skills lists and / or standards.

Qualifications

Applicants who have either successfully completed a unit secretary (HUC) course, or have a minimum of one year recent unit secretary (HUC) experience in a hospital setting, will be given preference. As an alternative to the aforementioned preferences, a HUC must successfully complete a Health Unit Coordinator Curriculum as assigned by the Employer within two weeks of hire as a HUC. Must be able to read with comprehension and write legibly. Must be proficient in use of proper grammar. Must have knowledge of :

Medical terminology

Hospital policies and procedures

Infection control

Fire and safety regulations

Secretarial or clerical experience is desired. Previous hospital experience is desired. Previous HUC experience preferred.

Certification in basic life support (CPR) may be required when the unit secretary works in a department where he / she is subject to assignment as a first responder to a cardiopulmonary arrest victim.
