Position Overview :
The Automation / Controls Engineer is a key member of the plant leadership team, focusing on electrical systems in the plant as well as control schemes, particularly as they apply to automation projects. This role is one of two Electrical and Controls Engineer II positions in the plant, supporting ongoing plant operations, helping set growth and migration targets for future state and is a critical contributor to any new plant projects.
Plant Overview :
The Phenix City, AL. facility swings between 24 / 5 to 24 / 7 with a variety of occasional alternate schedules to satisfy our customer’s needs; we are a manufacturer of a number of mineral wool insulation products including industrial boards of various densities, batts for use in commercial building applications and a wide range of pipe insulation.

Ability to reach all work areas in the plant (i.e. climb ladders, negotiate catwalks, handle heights to 50 feet, etc.), to lift twist and turn up to 50 lb. (i.e. open and close large valves, inspect equipment, and non-emergency equipment as needed.
Work Environment :
This job is in an industrial, manufacturing environment. Employee will have a workspace in the general office (engineering section), but will spend on average 30% of their day in the plant. The job requires working frequently around and with heavy machinery with moving mechanical parts, and mobile equipment. The environment is not climate controlled and employees must be able to work in environments that may be extremely hot and humid or cold depending upon the operation and the season. Walking surfaces can be wet, dusty, and uneven. Areas of the building where work must be done have high noise levels, vibration, and / or fumes. Some working areas contain the presence of airborne particles which can irritate the skin or eyes. Employees are required to wear personal protective equipment which includes safety toed shoes, ear protection, eye protection and in certain areas may be required to wear dust masks, gloves, respirators, or head protection.

IDEAL CANDIDATE
This is a newer role within our company. Qualified candidate will have experience with PLC / Automation / HMI in manufacturing environment. This person will work closely with another E&C Engineer as well as our Process Engineer. They will own plant infrastructure – pulling electrical / operations together. Candidates will need to understand both low and high volt components.
In order to assure the 18-month automation project is a success, this role was approved in the CapEx funding of the project and is now in AOP. This role is necessary not only for the project, but to ensure continued success as Phenix City continues to modernize the facility (other projects include ABB divorce and new spinners). The plant has added new automation, as well as old controls are becoming obsolete and requiring more attention, the demand has become too great and we must add to the team.

The Phenix City plant manufactures a number of mineral wool products including industrial boards in various densities, high density batts for use in commercial building applications, and a wide range of pipe insulation products. Mineral wool is made by melting several types of rock together, with the most significant percentage being basalt. The molten rock is then spun into fibers and formed into the final product. This location has 180 non-union employees in the plant. The hourly team works 12-hour shifts : 645a-7p and 645p-7a. Shipping is only 8 hours, pipe production is 10-4 days a week.
