Job Description :
The Project Manager will be responsible for overseeing heavy civil and transportation projects from pre-construction through final closeout. This includes managing financial performance, ensuring adherence to contract documents, coordinating field operations, and communicating with clients, superintendents, subcontractors, and internal leadership.
This position is a hands-on leadership role involving about 70% office-based work and 30% field oversight. The Project Manager is expected to serve as the primary point of contact throughout the project lifecycle and provide key support to both field teams and upper management.
Key Responsibilities :
Pre-Construction
- Participate in internal handoffs and pre-job meetings with clients and partners
- Set up cost codes, pay items, and documentation systems
- Manage submittals, certifications, and material tracking
- Coordinate procurement and delivery schedules for materials and equipment
- Review plans and schedules with field leaders and external contractors
- Handle utility coordination and site readiness tasks
Project Execution
Oversee daily construction progress, including production, labor, and equipment usageEnsure jobsite performance aligns with schedule, budget, safety, and quality standardsCollaborate with superintendents to manage staging, sequencing, and worksite logisticsResolve field issues quickly and ensure resource availabilityLead or attend weekly progress meetings and provide updates to all stakeholdersFinancial Management
Track production quantities, cost reports, and job progress using digital toolsManage budgets, forecasts, pay applications, and vendor invoicesHandle billing and documentation for change orders, T&M, and force account workMaintain cost visibility throughout the project and reconcile at project closeTechnology Integration
Use GPS, layout systems, and UAV (drone) tools for field verification and documentationTroubleshoot and maintain layout technology, and ensure accurate data uploadsPerform drone flights and process site data if certified (Part 107 preferred)Project Close-Out
Reconcile final quantities with field teams and clientsConfirm all billable work has been submitted and approvedSupport equipment demobilization and ensure jobsite cleanupParticipate in internal closeout reviews and knowledge sharingTeam Leadership & Mentorship
Lead and support field supervisors to ensure production goals are metShare resources, tools, and best practices with peers and new team membersAssist senior leadership with performance reporting and internal trainingQualifications : Experience & Skills
Minimum of 5 years in the construction industry, preferably with experience in heavy civil, sitework, or transportation projectsAt least 3 years managing construction projects with direct financial responsibilityProficient in Microsoft Excel and experienced with project management software (HCSS, Viewpoint, or similar tools preferred)Familiarity with GPS layout systems, UAVs, and digital modeling a plusSolid understanding of construction documentation, estimating, safety, and schedule managementStrong communication and leadership skills with the ability to coordinate across teams and rolesExperience with public works or DOT-related projects (e.g., IDOT, MoDOT) is a plusTraits & Work Style
