Job Summary

In collaboration with PIs and the One Health Institute (OHI) Laboratory Director, manage the One Health Institute Laboratory general operations, with the majority of time beyond that focused on managing the Smith laboratory's fee-for service programs along with complex research projects related to the ecology and pathology of protozoal diseases. Job duties include supervision of laboratory operations, regulatory safety compliance, training and supervising technical research staff, graduate students, and visiting faculty; test and supervise testing of clinical / research animal and environmental samples for evidence protozoal disease; report and interpret clinical testing results along with overseeing billing and budgetary tasks; optimize and develop protocols and assays to further improve research programs and testing services, in addition to supervising the development and execution of new research projects involving experimental design, data interpretation, literature review and publishing scientific papers.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and / or certification if required of the position

  • Master's degree or higher in biology-related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in supervising and training staff, students, and visiting scientists on a variety of diagnostic and research protocols; maintaining a productive, inclusive and positive work environment; and managing diagnostic testing services.
  • Demonstrated experience with research involving protozoal and bacterial work including serological optimization of techniques for assays, tissue culture, isolation, characterization, and animal infections; reporting and interpreting results with computing and writing skills needed to record protocols, summarize testing methodology, produce reports, and maintain clear records plus communicating with collaborating scientists and in preparing work for publication.
  • Advanced background knowledge in microbiology and immunology, with experience in either human or veterinary parasitology, bacteriology, and / or virology as they relate to the One Health approach of detecting and preventing infectious disease.
  • Strong technical and scientific knowledge leading to intellectual input and creative thinking to add original ideas that may change the course of research plans and / or outcomes and strong leadership skills associated with planning work assignments, establishing priorities, scheduling instructional space, and ensuring completion of multiple projects.
  • Advanced knowledge to effectively perform animal experiments and tissue culture techniques to isolate and maintain eukaryotic cells used to propagate infectious agents plus ability to seek out, understand, and perform new technical laboratory procedures as applied to tissue culture, immunology and molecular biology. This includes projects that involve animal handling (i.e, cattle, horses, dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, hamsters, rats and mice), as well as animal phlebotomy and injection techniques.
  • Strong skills in laboratory management including maintaining quality control of results, remedying problems with failed diagnostics, adhering to biological safety and containment regulations, maintaining and updating laboratory protocols and SOPs necessary for compliance and inspections, plus exercising judgement, initiative, and resourcefulness in making decisions during extended periods of absence from Pl and skills in staff management including recruitment, skill assessments, performance reviews, delegating responsibilities and handling disciplinary issues.

Preferred Qualifications

  • OHWF Competency Certificates.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of departmental purchasing policies and budget management of research funds.
  • Demonstrated English writing skills to record protocols, report test results, and prepare and organize papers for publication of data and results or grants for funding.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills to summarize research data, prepare figures and tables for publications, utilize reference manager software, and evaluate the work of other scientists.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills to effectively interact with, collaborate with, and train a wide variety of individuals, including faculty, students, staff and individuals from other University units and outside agencies.

    UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. Smoking, the use of smokeless tobacco products, and the use of unregulated nicotine products (e-cigarettes) will be strictly prohibited on any UC Davis owned or leased property, indoors and outdoors, including parking lots and residential space.

    Must be able to work flexible hours including occasional overtime, weekends and nights. Must have temperament to maintain effectiveness during times of stress. May be required to take complete charge of running the laboratory and the execution of research projects during prolonged absences of academic advisor. May be required to work with or be in areas where there are hazardous, chemically toxic compounds and / or pathogenic zoonotic organisms. Must be willing to perform approved experimental procedures on animals, follow well established laboratory protocols and manuals for some routine laboratory procedures, and attend special workshops to update the use of new bio-techniques. Must adhere to current animal care regulations as prescribed by CLAS and to regulations governing the handling of chemical and bio-hazardous substances, as prescribed by EH&S.
