Job Summary
In collaboration with PIs and the One Health Institute (OHI) Laboratory Director, manage the One Health Institute Laboratory general operations, with the majority of time beyond that focused on managing the Smith laboratory's fee-for service programs along with complex research projects related to the ecology and pathology of protozoal diseases. Job duties include supervision of laboratory operations, regulatory safety compliance, training and supervising technical research staff, graduate students, and visiting faculty; test and supervise testing of clinical / research animal and environmental samples for evidence protozoal disease; report and interpret clinical testing results along with overseeing billing and budgetary tasks; optimize and develop protocols and assays to further improve research programs and testing services, in addition to supervising the development and execution of new research projects involving experimental design, data interpretation, literature review and publishing scientific papers.

The One Health Institute is a multidisciplinary unit that focuses on the health of humans, animals, and their shared environments. It utilizes a One Health approach, recognizing that populations of domestic animals, wildlife, and people are inextricably linked with each other and the environment. At UC Davis, it is the organization under which faculty, staff, students, and other partners come together to address the complex health issues in a changing world, including zoonotic diseases that impact animals and humans.

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. Smoking, the use of smokeless tobacco products, and the use of unregulated nicotine products (e-cigarettes) will be strictly prohibited on any UC Davis owned or leased property, indoors and outdoors, including parking lots and residential space.
Must be able to work flexible hours including occasional overtime, weekends and nights. Must have temperament to maintain effectiveness during times of stress. May be required to take complete charge of running the laboratory and the execution of research projects during prolonged absences of academic advisor. Must follow and make sure staff and students follow safety procedures in working with infectious agents at bio-safety level 2, and chemical hazards. May be required to work with or be in areas where there are hazardous, chemically toxic compounds and / or pathogenic zoonotic organisms. Must be willing to perform approved experimental procedures on animals, follow well established laboratory protocols and manuals for some routine laboratory procedures, and attend special workshops to update the use of new bio-techniques. Must adhere to current animal care regulations as prescribed by CLAS and to regulations governing the handling of chemical and bio-hazardous substances, as prescribed by EH&S.
