Public Works Crew Member
Under direct supervision, the incumbent performs various routine and repetitive tasks to construct, repair, and maintain the city's water distribution, wastewater collection system, streets, right of ways, curbs, sidewalks, alleys, drainage systems, public areas, and all other city infrastructure.
Essential duties and responsibilities include : cleaning, repairing, and maintaining roads, bridges, medians, right of ways, alleys, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and other public areas within the city; performing routine and repetitive physical strenuous tasks including hand working asphalt and concrete, loading and unloading trucks, laying pipelines and repairing manholes, patching pot holes and overlaying streets, sealing cracks in asphalt and concrete, removing and replacing concrete, cutting brush and trees, mowing and weed-eating high grass and weeds, and maintaining clean street intersections, medians, and alleys; conducting daily inspections and preventative maintenance measures of vehicles, equipment, and tools; constructing, maintaining, and replacing water or sewer mains and sewer lines; operating various construction equipment; building and adjusting manholes and clean-outs; installing and repairing fire hydrants and valves; preparing trenches; and performing other water distribution, production, and collection tasks.
Additional duties include operating light to heavy equipment construction equipment and tools, assisting in the general maintenance and operation of wastewater lift station equipment, collecting water and wastewater samples, loading and unloading supplies and chemicals, performing general housekeeping of building interiors and exteriors, adhering to stand-by schedule for emergency repairs, and responding outside of normally scheduled work hours in response to emergencies.
Required knowledge, skills, and abilities include basic knowledge of equipment and tools used in maintaining city property and facilities, basic knowledge of cleaning and maintenance techniques for buildings, equipment and worksites, ability to follow oral or written instructions, and ability to safely operate or use equipment, tools, and cleaning supplies for the assigned duties.
Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or GED, two (2) years of experience in the maintenance, repair, and / or construction of streets, drainage, or water systems, type II wastewater and / or class C water distribution recognized through TCEQ, valid Texas driver's license, and ability to obtain a class B CDL driver's license within six (6) months of start date.
Physical demands include frequent repetitive motions, lifting various weights often heavy in nature, fine dexterity, and the ability to clearly see and hear. Frequent pushing, pulling, bending, stooping, crouching, climbing, digging, carrying, lifting, and kneeling will be required for some duties.
