Highway Maintenance Technician II

The work you will do :

  • This position will support the agency's mission by maintaining and repairing highways, bridges, and related infrastructure to ensure public safety and transportation efficiency.
  • It will involve the use of construction tools and equipment, performing vehicle inspections and maintenance, and working in diverse outdoor conditions.
  • The position also requires effective communication, the ability to follow instructions, and collaboration with team members to complete tasks safely and efficiently.

  • Annual Salary Range : $36,651.68 - $47,431.59. A Competitive Area Differential (CAD) additive in the amount of $1,934.40 will be added to the annual salary.

    Your specific responsibilities :

  • Upon receipt of the required CDL Instructional Permit or License; Operates a variety of vehicles and mechanized equipment to include backhoe, tractors with attachments, crew cabs, and dump truck.
  • Performs pre-trip inspection / minor maintenance on vehicles / equipment that they are operating. Cleans and washes equipment.
  • Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways.
  • Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments at an intermediate level of complexity with minimal supervision.
  • Performs rough carpentry, masonry, painting and / or assist in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
  • Performs Maintenance of Traffic control.
  • The successful candidate will have the following required knowledge, skills, and abilities :

  • Knowledge of typical construction measuring tools, equipment, or instruments and standard safety techniques.
  • Skills in operating a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Operating and performing pre-trip inspection / minor maintenance on vehicles and / or mechanized equipment that they are operating.
  • Ability to read and understand job-related materials and fill out reports and forms.
  • Ability to maintain and repair highways, bridges, and / or other highway structures.
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral / written instructions.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic.
  • Ability to stand for an extended period of time, operate motor vehicles and other mechanical equipment.
  • Other job-related requirements :

  • Due to the nature of this position, incumbent must respond to emergencies and be "on-call" (24-hour duty) when necessary.
  • While on-duty status, the positions incumbent must be readily available to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of commercial driver's license (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess.
  • The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.
  • Obtain certification in Maintenance of Traffic - Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it.
  • Possess a valid Class "E" driver's license and obtain a Class "B" CDL Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to position and obtain a valid Class "B" CDL with air brakes within 10 months of appointment to the position.
  • This position requires a valid Class (E) driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department's Driver's Record Requirements Policy.
  • Minimum qualifications :

  • Possess a valid Class "E" driver's license and obtain a Class "B" CDL Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to position and obtain a valid Class "B" CDL with air brakes within 10 months of appointment to the position.
  • This position requires a valid Class (E) driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department's Driver's Record Requirements Policy.
