Blood Collection Specialist
We are seeking a dedicated Lead Phlebotomist to provide exceptional leadership and support to our blood collection teams. In this role, you will not only perform vital phlebotomy procedures but also guide and motivate collection staff during blood drives or in our branches. Your expertise will ensure compliance with our organization's policies, FDA regulations, and AABB standards. If you're assigned to mobile units, you'll take on the additional responsibility of driving the bloodmobile.
Key Responsibilities
As a Lead Phlebotomist, your essential functions will include :
- Leading, instructing, and guiding the collection staff during blood drives or at the branches, ensuring efficient assignment of meal / break periods.
- Ensuring adherence to applicable policies and procedures by all staff.
- Collecting medical histories and vital signs from donors and / or patients.
- Performing phlebotomy and collection procedures accurately and safely.
- Completing all end-of-shift responsibilities, including reviewing donor records and regulated documents for accuracy.
- Assisting in recruiting donors, especially for apheresis and platelet donations, and supporting collection goals.
- Monitoring equipment functionality and ensuring the availability of necessary supplies for blood drives or branch operations.
- Tracking deferrals and performance metrics to identify training needs or equipment issues.
- Maintaining excellent customer service and professionalism while addressing donor and staff concerns.
- If assigned to a mobile unit, transporting the bloodmobile and other collection vehicles to designated locations.
Qualifications
To be successful in this role, candidates should meet the following qualifications :
Education and Experience :
High school diploma or equivalent, with at least six months of relevant experience.Certifications :
A CDL (Commercial Driver's License) is required for mobile positions; CPR certification is also necessary.Skills and Abilities :
Ability to comprehend and apply safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals.Proficiency in writing routine reports and documentation.Strong organizational skills to ensure timely completion of tasks.Effective oral and written communication skills.Capability to build and maintain collaborative working relationships.Basic computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office applications.Ability to commute with personal transportation.Physical fitness to handle tasks involving lifting, standing, and driving, especially for mobile assignments.Flexibility to work weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.Physical and Environmental Requirements :
This position entails moderate physical demands, potentially lifting heavy objects (up to 50 lbs). The work environment may expose you to inclement weather, hazardous materials, and requires compliance with safety standards due to potential blood-borne pathogens. Some duties will be performed in confined or small spaces, especially in mobile units, and involve significant driving responsibilities.
