A Spotter / Hostler uses a yard tractor to hook up to and move either loaded or empty trailers.
This unit is an automatic with 2 axles. It has a low ratio rear end with a hydraulic power lift system that enables the Spotter / Hostler to raise and move trailers loaded very heavy. It is designed to turn very tight, with good visibility and power steering. It has a top speed of about 30 mph. At most sites, the yard speed limit is from 515 miles per hour.
The Spotter / Hostler during the shift will enter and exit the unit often. The exit door is at the rear of the unit. It has handholds and steps up to the cab door. During the shift, the Spotter / Hostler will be placing chocks, removing chocks, opening and closing trailer doors, and placing seals on trailers.
A Spotter / Hostler will be required to do a pre and post trip inspection on the unit each shift. Pre- and post-trip inspection sheets will be filled out and turned in to site management. Spotter / Hostler will be responsible for reporting damage to any USF equipment as well as other trailers under USF control.
The Spotter / Hostler will need to stay in close communication with dispatch during the shift. A certain amount of other company-related paperwork may be handled.
The Spotter / Hostler must be a highly motivated, good listener, number-oriented, safety-conscious person. Some sites may have job-specific duties for their Spotters / Hostlers that have not been set out here
