Salary
Base pay range : $300,000.00 per year – $335,000.00 per year.
Summary
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval – award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
Qualifications
- Basic Requirements
- Citizenship : United States Citizen. Non-citizens may be appointed only if no qualified citizen can be recruited in accordance with VA Policy.
- Degree : Doctor of Medicine or equivalent (osteopathic medicine). Degree must have been obtained from a VA-approved school in the year the course was completed.
- License : Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in any U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or district of Columbia.
- Residency Training : Completed residency in an accredited core specialty training program approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, leading to eligibility for board certification.
- Board Certification : Ophthalmologist – either board certified or board eligible.
- Additional Requirement : Ophthalmologist seeking Comprehensive Eye Surgeon, must have MIGS implantation experience or be willing to obtain MIGS certification and / or have Glaucoma Fellowship training.
- Physical Requirements : Visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinct speech, manual dexterity. Must be capable of long periods of walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. May need to transfer patients and objects, wear protective clothing, and occasionally handle combative patients with delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. Must perform CPR per ACLS / BLS protocols.
- Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
- Existing VA physicians who met the previous qualification standard at time of initial appointment are considered to meet basic requirements.
Duties
Open continuous announcement until December 22, 2025.Initial referral cut-off date : October 27, 2025; subsequent cut-offs every 5 days.Recruitment Incentive – Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, salary increases.Travel : 1–2 days per week to McClellan Outpatient Clinic.Paid Time Off : 50–55 days per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays, plus 5 days for CME). Retirement : Traditional federal pension and 401(k) with up to 5% VA contribution.Licensure : One full and unrestricted state license required.Malpractice : Free liability protection with tail coverage. No significant restriction on moonlighting.Clinical Duties : Cataract surgery, diabetic retinopathy laser therapy, glaucoma treatment, macular degeneration injections, and other ophthalmology procedures.Direct Patient Care : History and physicals, medication management, diagnostic test evaluation, treatment planning, surgical procedures, clinical reminder completion.Administrative Duties : Document all medical information in the electronic medical record.Quality Improvement : Participate in process improvement projects, bi-annual medical staff activities, committee participation.Operations Oversight : Provide efficient patient management and supervise the Ophthalmology Clinic.Education Duties : Instruct and educate ophthalmology residents.Seniority level
