Firefighter Emt

The Firefighter EMT is responsible for preventing and extinguishing fires and providing care, treatment, and transportation for medical emergencies in the pre-hospital setting while providing said emergency medical care up to the basic life support level as approved by the Hernando County Common Medical Protocols. Examples of duties include operating and maintaining all types of apparatus and equipment used in fire / rescue activities, responding to all alarms assigned by the dispatch center, conducting pre-fire planning and enforcing of burn laws, and participating in pre-fire inspections and investigations of hazardous conditions found during routine area familiarization training. Other duties include performing vehicle extrication, providing exemplary patient care, staying informed on rescue related activities, supplies, and facilities, and performing cleaning and maintaining of fire engines, rescue units, fire stations, and equipment.

Typical qualifications include a high school graduate or equivalent, two years of working with a paid or part-paid fire department or attending Firefighter I, II and EMT classes within the past three years. Special requirements include maintaining a clean police record, obtaining a CJIS Clearance, and being subject to the Hepatitis B Vaccine and other vaccines as needed. Licenses, certifications, or registrations required include a valid Florida Drivers License, State of Florida Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) License, BLS Provider, department approved, EVOC Certification, current or pass approved department EVOC course, and Florida State Firefighter II Compliance.

Required competencies include knowledge of modern firefighting principles, practices, procedures, and techniques, knowledge of the operations and maintenance of all apparatus and equipment used in rescue activities, and knowledge of rules and regulations of the Fire and Emergency Services Department.
