Position Summary

The METS Representative – Electrical Engineer plays a vital role in supporting materials quality assurance and source inspection for transportation construction projects across California. The role focuses on electrical components used in infrastructure projects and involves coordinating with Caltrans' METS team, labs, contractors, fabricators, and various project stakeholders to ensure compliance with project requirements, applicable codes, and quality standards.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support quality assurance activities for electrical materials and systems on transportation projects.
  • Assist in coordinating and conducting source inspections of service cabinets, electrical components, equipment, and materials.
  • Review and interpret electrical plans, specifications, and contract documents to verify compliance.
  • Make objective and reasonable materials engineering decisions related to ensuring materials and products used in State construction projects comply with contract requirements.
  • Support analysis of testing results for electrical inspections including ground fault, grounding resistance, insulation resistance, continuity, and load testing.
  • Provide on-site and remote support to project teams by verifying proper installation and location of electrical equipment and systems.
  • Assist in the coordination and review of fabrication shop quality control processes and submittals.
  • Support METS' customers, including Resident Engineers, Structure Representatives, and District Materials Engineers, with inspection planning and technical questions.
  • Document inspection findings and contribute to the preparation of reports and tracking of project QA metrics.
  • Assist with identifying and resolving material-related concerns in coordination with project stakeholders.
  • Participate in review of new electrical products, authorized material lists, facility audits, and source inspection visits as needed to support Caltrans' QA efforts.
  • Support internal outreach, technical training, and awareness around inspection requirements and material compliance.
  • Maintain accurate records and ensure proper documentation of inspections, communications, and QA activities.
  • Maintain standards and consistency while minimizing the impact on work schedule and cost.
  • Conduct outreach to METS' customers, providing technical presentations and training on electrical processes and technical support services.
  • Perform review of materials management records for various projects. Travel to project offices for face-to-face meetings.
  • Track project resources and work with appropriate State staff to manage resource requests as needed.
  • Ensure electrical submittals are reviewed and approved before start of construction.
  • Hold regular meetings with METS staff from regional offices to brief on project issues and provide cross-training.
  • Review and provide comments on office guidance and manuals as requested by METS.
  • Participate in technical committees as assigned by METS.
  • Manage and track metrics on project and program efforts.
  • Coordinate workload with office staff as needed.
  • Report on project and program progress to METS senior management.
  • Desired Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience working in the construction / engineering industry, public works, or large industrial construction projects with a focus on Electrical Materials Quality Assurance and Source Inspection.
  • Experience with METS / Caltrans preferred.
  • Licensed Electrical Professional Engineer (PE) registered in the State of California.
  • Familiarity with project reporting and creation of monthly project metrics.
  • Ability to use and interpret contract documents, drawings, schedule, and quality control plans.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to develop and give technical presentations.
  • Understanding of document management systems.
  • Basic knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations governing public works construction contracting.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Work in the client office Monday through Friday.
  • Travel through California and out-of-state as needed.
  • Physical Demands and Working Conditions

    While performing the duties of this job, the associate is regularly required to sit for up to 6 to 8 hours per day while working at a computer, during meetings or while driving. Walking up to 2 hours per day while performing field visits. The associate frequently uses hands. The associate is required to use hands. The employee must frequently lift and / or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and / or move up to 25 pounds. The associate is required to work in all weather conditions and can work any day of the week both night and day. Available for after-hour emergency response.

    Wage Range

    $166,400.00 - $210,000.00 per year
