About The Role :

Settled in the award-winning San Diego Convention Center, the Assistant Manager of Public Safety plays a key role within the San Diego Convention Center Public Safety Division. Reporting to and supporting the Manager of Public Safety, the Assistant Manager of Public Safety is a people leader, and a manager of resources, tasks, and projects. This role bridges tactical execution and operational performance, ensuring consistent, top tier team performance, staff development, and operational excellence.

What You Will Do :

Utilizes various security-related technologies, including access control systems, life / fire / safety systems, video management systems (VMS), incident reporting, shift log software, and mobile communication devices.

Utilizes web-based payroll software for completing time and attendance for employees, reviews and approves employee timesheets, ensuring accuracy in shift assignments, attendance tracking, and compliance with payroll procedures.

Administers first aid and / or CPR to guests or employees when required.

Serves as an alternate crowd control manager and coordinates guest movements throughout the facility, making staffing adjustments, or providing direction as needed.

Provides, coordinates, and oversees internal training to employees regarding Fire / Life Safety, building procedures, and protocol outlined in Public Safety standard operating procedures and corporate policy.

Responsible for accurately documenting employee investigations.

Act as the incident manager in the absence of the Manager of Public Safety to lead and coordinate any emergency responses.

Liaison with local law enforcement and first responders to coordinate emergency responses or incident investigations.

Lead the development and implementation of training programs and SOPs.

Oversee onboarding and continuing education for staff.

Manage security-related technologies and life safety equipment, including surveillance systems, access control, incident reporting platforms, AEDs, bleeding control kits, and fire / life safety systems.

Conduct investigations, document findings, and brief senior leaders

Provide employee development, coaching and discipline, as needed.

Lead or support special projects and continuous improvement initiatives.

Key contributor or leader for the implementation and project management of the department’s training and technology strategy, including system upgrades, new platform rollouts, and coordination with IT, HR, and external vendors.

Other duties may be assigned.

What You Will Need :

Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school; at least six years’ experience in security or loss prevention or equivalent combination of education and experience.

At least three years of previous experience directly supervising or leading employees and directing daily work, with a strong understanding of the principles of team building and performance management.

Experience within a large within a large public assembly facility, convention center, stadium, or similar venue is strongly desired.

Must have a valid California driver’s license

First Aid / CPR certification is preferred. California Guard Card preferred.

Crowd Manager training and / or International Association of Event Management (IAVM) Academy for Venue Safety & Security (AVSS) is highly desired.

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

Must possess excellent verbal and non-verbal communication skills including the ability to provide calm, clear direction and assistance during emergency and non-emergency situations, and answer questions of guests and employees regarding the facility in the English language.

Must exhibit diplomacy, integrity, and innovation in working with a diverse employee and management team.

Strong computer literacy with proficiency in word processing and spreadsheet applications to compose routine written reports and correspondence within a limited period for department and corporation management.

Must be willing and able to work non-standard work hours, be able to work and rotate between all three shifts, and be able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed.

While performing the duties of this job, the Assistant Manager of Public Safety is regularly required to be mobile between the Security Base Station and the Supervisors office location.

Throughout the day the Assistant Manager of Public Safety is required to be mobile around the facility to monitor employee assignments, attend briefings and line-ups, and respond to both emergency and non-emergency situations.

The Assistant Manager of Public Safety is regularly required to be stationed at a computer to access and complete electronic reports and timecard records.

The Assistant Manager of Public Safety must frequently lift and / or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and / or move up to 50 pounds.

The ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and / or other sounds (e.g., machinery, vehicles, fire alarms, or 2-way radio transmissions).

Exposure to loud environments, mechanical equipment, and emergency situations.

The offices for Public Safety Managers are located on a dock-level area of the Convention Center with no immediate access to external windows. Indoor HVAC unit monitors and controls temperature and airflow. Lighting is provided by overhead bulbs and lamps

The noise level in the offices and Security Base Station is usually moderate and includes noise from employees talking, and machinery in operation outside the office as well as on the dock.

During patrol and incident responses, work areas for this position may be located on different show floors, which include lobby areas, front driveway, and security base, loading docks, exhibit halls, mezzanine level, and upper-level meeting rooms.

While on the show floor, employees may be exposed to moving mechanical parts and equipment, such as forklifts and electric carts, as well as loud noises originating from the use of individual and multiple quantities of mechanical equipment.

The employee is occasionally exposed to biohazards, toxic or caustic chemicals, exhaust fumes, airborne particles, and risk of electrical shock for both indoor and outdoor environments.

The noise level on the show floor is usually loud.

The outside work environment includes exposure to uneven street pavement and sidewalks and high levels of pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

Exposure to hot and cold environments.

This position requires frequent interaction with guests and the public while at the facility.
