Building & Safety Inspector

The employee in this classification will perform routine duties in support of the Building & Safety Division's operational needs and activities; to conduct building inspections; to enforce compliance with building codes, regulations and ordinances; to work with developers, architects and contractors to maintain code requirements; and to perform a variety of technical duties relative to assigned area of responsibility.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following :
- Performs routine duties in support of the Building & Safety Divisions operations and activities; inspects buildings and structures as assigned to ensure compliance with applicable codes, ordinances and regulations.
- Examines plans and specifications for new construction, additions and alterations to buildings to determine compliance with applicable building and construction codes, ordinances and regulations.
- Inspects foundation, concrete, framing, plastering, plumbing, electrical installations and a large variety of other complex and routine building system elements.
- May confer with architects, contractors, builders and the general public in the field and office; perform counter service duties; explain and interpret building requirements and restrictions.
- Enforces compliance with building ordinances, codes and regulations; locates and resolves cases of illegal construction.
- Issues construction and occupancy permits as assigned; participates in final inspection certifications.
- Coordinates inspection activities with the Fire Department; enforces safe fire and code regulations.
- Maintains files and reports regarding inspection and plan check activities and findings.
- Researches building methods and practices as necessary to properly renew plans and drawings.
- Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of :
Operations, services and activities of a municipal building inspection and code enforcement program.Laws, ordinances and codes regulating building construction and zoning.Basic methods and techniques of building inspection.Pertinent codes and ordinances related to building, plumbing, electrical and building requirements.Building safety and fire prevention techniques.Principles and procedures of record keeping.Principles and practices of technical report preparation.Modern office procedures, methods and equipment including computers and supporting word processing and spreadsheet applications.Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.Pertinent Federal, State and local codes, laws and regulations.Ability to :
Read and interpret building plans and specifications.Learn to perform building inspections and detect deviations from plans and specifications.Prepare clear and concise technical reports.Maintain records and files.Learn to interpret, explain and enforce applicable building codes and ordinances.Understand and follow oral and written instructions.Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.Maintain mental capacity which allows for effective interaction and communication with others.Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading, writing and operating assigned equipment.Experience and Training Guidelines :
Two (2) years in engineering, architecture, or a skilled craft in the construction industryEquivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in the building trades or a related field.License or Certificate :
Possession of a drivers license.Possession of Certification as a Commercial Building Inspector by the International Code Council required within one (1) year of employment.Application Procedure

Examinations for the positions may consist of any combination of written, performance, and oral exams to evaluate the applicant's skills, training, and experience for the position. Successful applicants will be placed on an eligibility list. The City may also merge lists.
The selected candidate(s) must successfully complete pre-employment clearances which may include a physical, drug screen, and fingerprinting.
Veterans Preference Credit Eligibility
Veterans of the armed forces, who have been discharged or released from active duty under conditions other than dishonorable, shall receive an additional five (5) points to their final examination score for ranking purposes only. This preference will apply only to the first appointment to any regular full-time City appointment. A copy of your valid DD214 must be submitted on or before the final filing date in order to be eligible for Veterans Preference Credit.
