Required certifications include BLS, ACLS, PALS, and NIHSS. Patient-to-nurse ratio is 1 to 4, or 1 to 2 for ICU patients. Electronic medical records system is Cerner. Charge nurse is the shift manager, with a resource nurse available. Nurse aides are EM techs or aides from other units. Weekend requirement includes 4 weekend shifts in a 4-week schedule. Holidays include 1 major and 1 minor holiday. Scrub color must be navy blue, including scrub jackets and undershirts, which can only be navy, white, or black. Telemetry is managed with Phillips equipment. Ventilators are available. Hospitalist or intensivist is in-house. IV team is not available. Respiratory therapy is available 24 / 7. Pharmacy services are available 24 / 7, along with Omnicell. Shift options include 12-hour shifts with specific start times. Self-scheduling is in place but not finalized until the manager balances it. Schedules are created for 4 weeks, and block scheduling is not guaranteed. Floating could occur between facilities, with a 2-hour notice prior to the shift if floated. Mid-shift floating may also happen. Floor-specific orientation consists of shifts at primary and secondary campuses. Common diagnoses include a variety of patients, with fewer pediatric cases. Correctional patients are present, as officers accompany them from the correctional facility. All obstetric patients are transferred. The unit serves a significant homeless and indigent population. Cardiac patients are stabilized and transferred out. This position must be the primary job for the candidate. Teamwork orientation is essential. The unit treats between 85 and 115 patients daily, with an average of 100 patients per day. Cancellation policy allows for up to 4 shifts to be canceled within the 13-week assignment. Charting is conducted using Cerner.
