This professional organization is a marketer’s paradise! They have loads of editorial content that’s of tremendous interest to their membership, and they provide a variety of revenue-generating services (e-learning, conferences, certifications, etc) that they sell (and often deliver) online. Email is their primary marketing and content distribution channel, and they have a big team operationally creating and sending a lot of campaigns. But, as often happens with growing organizations, it’s time to optimize, and that’s why they need you …

In this strategic role, you will look at all email marketing activities and transform them into a more efficient, mutually reinforcing whole. You’ll figure out how to digest, prioritize, and de-duplicate what gets sent. You’ll make visual design and content recommendations. You’ll figure out what existing practices are working and which aren’t. You’ll work with and get to know stakeholders from editorial, advertising, marketing for the various revenue streams, and others, understanding their incentives and KPIs and looking for ways to improve outcomes across the organization.

In short, you’ll be building the foundations of an email center of excellence that will focus all marketing efforts on the needs of the members. You’ll create processes and practices that will avoid overload and improve engagement, thereby driving conversion, retention, and growth.

Hired Gun Profile

You have several years’ experience in email marketing and have learned all the ropes of hands-on production and content creation. During that time, you’ve worked at a large membership organization, non-profit, or B2C e-commerce company, anywhere with a complex lead-gen funnel, big lists, lots of sends, and lots of cross-promotions and other complex moving parts. You’ve moved up to have input into the strategic side of email marketing (establishing processes and best practices and creating templates and style guides) and have also gotten exposure to CRM/marketing automation (knowledge of Marketo or another major platform is desired). Analytics expertise (Google Analytics at least). Jira a plus.
