Job description

Job Opportunity

This is a part time, at will, maintenance position for the Public Works Division of the Development Services Department.

Under direct supervision, performs basic maintenance duties at the City of Lancaster and performs other duties as assigned. General direction is provided by a Public Works Lead Worker over the area assigned. Work is reviewed while in progress and by the results achieved. Employees at this level receive direct supervision and are given direction on the operating procedures and policies within the work unit.

Responsibilities :

  • Provide support to the Maintenance Services section's Concrete Crew, Asphalt Crew, and / or Parkways Crew in the installation, repair, and maintenance of streets, sidewalks, drains, and public right-of-way projects; maintain and repair concrete structures, including sidewalks, curbs and gutters; laying asphalt and sealing cracks; finishing cement; performing traffic control, including setting up and removing signs and cones, and flagging and directing traffic around work sites; weed abatement; operating trucks and equipment;
  • Provide support during special events including set-up, clean-up and other related duties during events.
  • Provide support to Utility Services in the operation and maintenance of sewers, drainage, and recycled water. Including but not limited to pump maintenance repair, electrical repair, and plumbing.
  • Provide support to the Recycling Center with the Environmental Crew and may include pouring oil, sorting paint, sorting electronic waste, and organizing / cleaning the facility.
  • Maintain logs and records of work performed; maintain supply lists; order supplies as assigned
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and City Staff.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications :

  • High school graduation or equivalent
  • Possession of a valid California driver's license
  • Open availability and ability to work up to 24 hours per week.
  • Possess excellent interpersonal communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work occasionally in poor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow. Work is primarily performed outside
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Desirable / Preferable Qualifications :

  • Computer skills
  • A California commercial driver's license (Class A or B)
  • Forklift experience
  • A minimum of six months of maintenance experience is highly desirable.

  • Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a field environment; to walk, stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach, twist, grasp and make repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties; to lift, carry, push, and / or pull light to moderate amounts of weight (100 pounds with assistance and up to 50 pounds alone); to operate assigned equipment and vehicles; and to verbally communicate to exchange information; and to respond to emergencies and call-outs.
  • Environmental :

    Work is performed both in indoors and in outdoor field environment; may work alone; incumbents may be exposed to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, noxious odors, chemicals, mechanical and electrical hazards, in all types of weather and temperature conditions; exposure to hazardous traffic conditions; work and / or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces and rough terrain; workers may be required to respond to emergency calls after hours, including evening and weekends and / or work unusual and prolonged work schedules or work multiple shifts during emergencies, seasonally-caused circumstances, or special projects.
