Job Overview : The School Custodian is essential in maintaining a clean, safe, and operational environment within the school premises. This role includes a variety of tasks aimed at ensuring cleanliness, conducting maintenance duties, and adhering to health and safety standards, with specific physical demands related to lifting and carrying.
Key Responsibilities :
Cleaning and Maintenance Tasks : Clean assigned school facilities, including classrooms, offices, restrooms, and other areas. Use brooms, mops, and floor cleaning equipment, vacuum cleaners, and clean and sanitize toilet areas, washrooms, showers, and locker rooms.Furniture and Equipment Arrangement : Arrange furnishings and equipment for meetings, classroom activities, and special events. This includes setting up, breaking down, lifting, moving, and storing furniture and equipment used for meetings, functions, and assemblies.Building Systems Regulation and Maintenance : Work with the facilities management team to regulate and maintain heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, and make minor repairs and adjustments to heating & ventilation systems, plumbing systems, and replace light bulbs.Safety and Operational Response : Respond to immediate safety and / or operational concerns, and maintain a functioning educational environment. Follow all health, safety, and code compliance rules, regulations, and procedures, including components of communicable disease prevention and control plans.Facility Security : Secure facilities and grounds at Blackstone Valley Prep, including locking doors, turning off lights, and ensuring all access, egress points, and windows (as necessary) are secured at the end of each working period.Supply and Equipment Management : Distribute / replenish supplies and equipment, store cleaning solutions, compounds, and chemicals securely, and notify management of necessary repairs or enhancements.Facility Maintenance and Preparation : Survey Blackstone Valley Prep facilities for safety, cleanliness, and necessary repairs, and prepare facilities for daily operations.Collaboration and Communication : Assist other personnel as needed and communicate job-related issues or concerns to the Dean of Operations, Network Operations, and the Head of School.Compliance and Safety : Uphold cleanliness and sanitation in accordance with applicable guidelines, manage, store, and dispose of chemicals and cleaning products safely, and regularly check the school for safety hazards.Inventory and Resource Management : Organize the custodian's spaces and areas, replenish cleaning and bathroom supplies weekly or as needed, and maintain practices that ensure economical use of resources.Grounds Maintenance : As needed, clear snow, leaves, and debris from sidewalks, maintain driveways, parking areas, entrances, and passageways, playgrounds spaces, or school property deemed necessary by the Facilities Management team and post warning signs for hazardous conditions.Event and Program Support : Provide support for assemblies, meetings, events, and assist with breakfast and / or lunch programs as required.Safety Inspections and Compliance : Regularly check the school for safety hazards, and maintain compliance with fire and safety codes, and report any issues.Alternate Work Locations : Work in other school buildings, as directed.Facility Utilization & Support Service : Relocate, retrieve, and / or deliver furniture, furnishings, supplies, and materials as needed.Resource Conservation & Business Practices : Report accomplishments, process work requests, and follow established timelines.Flag Management : Raise and lower Federal and State flags at appropriate intervals.Additional Duties : Perform other related duties as assigned, which may include minor pest control, painting, minor carpentry, furniture assembly, emergency assistance, and being exposed to adverse weather conditions and contaminants.Physical Requirements and Working Conditions :
Physical demands include lifting, carrying, bending, and prolonged standing.Exposure to cleaning agents and outdoor conditions.Availability for emergencies or non-standard hours may be required.Occasional working outside during inclement weather.Occasional climbing and balancing, frequent lifting, pushing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and / or crawling.Ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds routinely, including up more than one flight of stairs, and occasionally up to 75 pounds.Ability to handle commercial cleaning equipmentAbility to climb ladders up to twenty four (24) feet.Qualifications :
High School Diploma or equivalentMinimum intermediate proficiency in English (must be able to read, write, and communicate effectively in English)Flexibility to work beyond regular working hours as needed
