POSITION DESCRIPTION :

Provides professional nursing care for patients following established standards and practices; Demonstrates professional clinical leadership and oversight within the scope of the RN role.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS :

• Identifies emergent medical and / or related patient situations and assists patients by assessing appropriate level of care required. If in question, errs on side of higher level of care if unable to clarify with provider at point of service.
• Consults with providers and other patient care team members as appropriate to effectively ensure quality patient care that is consistent with and pertinent to the patient.
• Ensures proper triaging of patients and appropriate delivery of care in accordance with established treatment plans.
• Manages patient caseload effectively, in compliance with IHA protocols and employee's scope of practice.
• Serves as a medical care information resource for patients.
• Documents complete and accurate patient records related to calls received, data collected, services rendered, follow-up provided, and / or outcomes as described by the patient or family.
• Directly enters medication, laboratory, and radiology orders into the electronic medical record per state, local and professional guidelines.
• Receives, collects key data and answers based on clinical protocol guidelines and triages patient telephone calls as per approved clinical protocol guidelines; Consults with provider for areas of question or lack of clarity.
• Performs nursing protocols applicable and approved to organizational procedures; includes medication refills.
• Serves as a resource to clinical office staff within scope of RN role; may direct the work of LPN and Medical Assistant staff as needed.
• Facilitates office quality / performance incentive initiatives.
• Coordinates care with external / payer case managers.
• Supports other offices, attends required meetings and training, and participates in committees as requested.

Performs other duties as assigned and works within scope of RN licensure.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS :

EDUCATION : Bachelor's degree / graduate of an accredited Registered Nursing Program or LPN with Triage experience.

CREDENTIALS / LICENSURE : Valid, unrestricted RN or LPN license in the State of Michigan. Valid CPR certification.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE : 1-2 years of clinical experience in a medical or physician office

POSITION REQUIREMENTS (ABILITIES & SKILLS) :

Successful completion of IHA competency-based program within introductory and training period.

MINIMUM PHYSICAL EXPECTATIONS :

Must hear and speak well enough to conduct business over the telephone or face to face for long periods of time in English.

MINIMUM ENVIRONMENTAL EXPECTATIONS :

This job operates in a medical facility and requires regular walking to various locations around the hospital / clinic. Employees will be working where there is patient care equipment. Hazardous materials, including bloodborne pathogens and bodily fluids are also present. Exposure to sharps, x-rays, patients' conditions and some unpleasant sights, smells and contagious diseases are possible. This position requires significant interaction with people (many of whom are scared, hurt and / or ill) which can be stressful and result in competing priorities.
