Job Description
We are expanding our team in the Correctional Services division at the Oregon State Penitentiary (OSP) in Salem. The Correctional Counselor is an experienced professional case manager who helps adult inmates (Adult in Custody, AIC) with rehabilitation, motivation for change, and case planning. You will conduct daily one-on-one interviews, assessments, risk / needs evaluations, and file reviews to determine custody classification, gate clearance, and population management decisions.
Responsibilities
Set the stage for rehabilitation and elicit motivation for change in each AIC from the beginning of their incarceration.Conduct daily interviews and assessments for AICs, including risk / needs evaluations and file reviews.Provide intensive and intermediate case management based on risk to recidivate and special needs.Offer basic services to low-risk AICs, ensuring effective support across all risk levels.Serve as the core correctional resource in a multi-disciplinary team; build rapport with program disciplines and foster a holistic systems-based model.Contribute to institutional safety, reduce recidivism, and support successful reintegration.Collaborate with the Association of Oregon Corrections Employees (AOCE) and may be eligible for Police & Fire (P&F) benefits through PERS.Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in behavioral science, criminal justice, or related field with major coursework in behavioral science AND at least two (2) years of professional counseling experience with clientele in a social service or rehabilitative program; ORThree (3) years of experience in a social service, rehabilitative, or correctional program with a primary responsibility for counseling individuals or groups AND at least two (2) years of professional counseling experience; ORMaster's degree in behavioral science AND one year of professional counseling experience with clientele in a social service or rehabilitative program.Note : Professional counseling experience must include providing supportive counseling on a one-to-one basis with full responsibility for developing and managing each case plan. Experience in any security series position does not substitute for the required minimum qualifications.

The position is inside a secure adult correctional facility with daily interactions with adults in custody. Must prevent escapes, document incidents, manage keys, tools, and contraband. May encounter abusive adults and be at risk of physical injury. Call-back may require placement in any post. Exposure to temperature extremes and inclement weather. Required to perform outdoor duties, walk long distances, use stairs to reach second level housing units. Must use computer for email, word processing, and correctional information systems.
