The Director of Safety plays a critical leadership role in shaping and driving the safety culture at Fidium, ensuring alignment between corporate safety strategy, regulatory requirements, and day-to-day operational needs. This role is responsible for overseeing all aspects of occupational health and safety, leading a geographically dispersed team, and fostering a proactive, prevention-focused safety environment. This is a predominantly remote position, ideally within a commutable distance to the Northern New England (NNE) region.
Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership : Develop and execute comprehensive safety and occupational health strategies that align with Fidium's operational goals and regulatory standards.
Program Management : Plan and implement safety programs and initiatives that drive measurable improvements in safety performance across all business units.
Team Development : Lead, train, and mentor a team of safety professionals; assess performance and support career development.
Incident Response & Investigation : Oversee the investigation of serious incidents, ensuring root cause analysis, regulatory reporting, and effective corrective actions.
Compliance & Risk Mitigation : Ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT, and other applicable safety regulations; identify and mitigate safety risks across the enterprise.
Safety Culture & Accountability : Build and maintain a culture of safety accountability through engagement, education, and consistent performance expectations at all organizational levels.
Contractor and Subcontractor Safety Compliance : Critical in to ensure all parties adhere to safety standards.
Emergency & Disaster Preparedness : Develop and oversee emergency response plans tailored to geographic-specific risks.
Data & Reporting : Analyze safety performance data, identify trends, and present insights and recommendations to executive leadership.
Innovation & Continuous Improvement : Champion innovation in safety technologies, processes, and practices to reduce incidents and improve employee wellbeing.
Cross-Functional Collaboration : Work closely with operational leadership, HR, legal, and other departments to integrate safety into all business functions.
Budget & Resource Management : Provide input into departmental budgets, manage resources effectively, and track key performance indicators.
Qualifications
Education & Experience : Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience). Minimum 10 years of progressive safety leadership experience, including 5+ years in a senior or managerial capacity.
Industry Expertise : Experience in telecommunications, internet services, utilities, or similarly complex, multi-site environments is strongly preferred.
Labor Environment Experience : Proven success working in both union and non-union environments, with an understanding of the nuances of labor relations as they relate to safety and compliance.
Leadership & Influence : Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and influence safety performance across field and executive levels.
Technical Knowledge : Deep knowledge of safety regulations (e.g., OSHA, DOT), risk management principles, and incident
