Legal Clerk I / II

The Kings County District Attorney Office is currently seeking qualified individuals for the position of Legal Clerk I / II. Depending on experience, this position offers the opportunity to learn or independently perform a wide range of legal clerical duties. Join a team committed to justice and public service! Duty Sample

Some duties, knowledge, skills, and abilities may be performed in a learning capacity for entry-level (I Level) positions.

  • Prepares, types and / or processes a wide variety of legal documents including subpoenas and discovery information, complaints, search warrants, arrest warrants and related documents, briefs, motions, petitions and orders, information, jury instructions, verdicts, and findings.
  • Files a variety of legal documents and related case materials; retrieves information from files; copies materials requested from files and sends to appropriate party; delivers files and documents to Court or appropriate party; prepares materials for mailing.
  • Schedules and maintains attorney and court calendars; coordinates and schedules appointments for interviews, meetings and court appearances for attorneys and agencies or parties involved in judicial matters.
  • Completes drafts of appropriate forms to implement judicial court orders; prepares subpoenas per instructions.
  • Prepares and completes a wide variety of legal and non-legal documents; receives and tracks notifications of child abuse / neglect,
  • Requests critical information and records from various law enforcement and related agencies.
  • Files legal documents with the Court Clerk's office.
  • Researches jury lists of potential jurors attorneys in preparation for trial.
  • Prepares and compiles statistical information for quarterly reports for grant funded desks.
  • Safely drives a vehicle to deliver documents to and retrieve documents from the Courts and other offices.
  • Prepares document files; assigns identification codes; retrieves files and searches for missing files; prepares and uses indices to locate materials; follows procedures for updating and / or purging files; prepares documents for microfilming; microfilms documents.
  • Greets the public; answers routine questions both in person and on the telephone; provides general information pertaining to court services.
  • Verifies, enters, retrieves, corrects, and updates information in manual and / or automated record keeping systems.
  • Observes and complies with County and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

    Education and Experience

    Education : Legal Clerk I and II : Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12

    th

    ) grade.

    Experience : Legal Clerk I : One (1) year of general clerical experience. Legal Clerk II : One (1) year of experience at a level equivalent to the classification of a Legal Clerk I in Kings County.

    Licenses and Certifications Licenses : Possession of a valid California driver's license issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles at the time of appointment.

    Special Requirements Qualify for security clearance through a background investigation and fingerprint check.

Depending upon the number of applicants who meet the minimum qualifications, the examination process may include a screening committee (pass / fail) and / or a written examination (pass / fail) and / or an oral examination (100%) to determine placement on the eligible list. Note : Those applicants who are among the top 40 written test scores will be invited to participate in the oral examination process.
