Mechanical Engineer
Reports To : Optics / Systems Engineering Manager
Summary
We are looking for a skilled and innovative Mechanical Design Engineer to join our engineering team. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, developing, and testing mechanical components and systems. This role involves a focus on product development and working closely with other disciplines including manufacturing and quality to ensure designs meet performance, cost and manufacturing objectives.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Strong analytical skills pertaining to machine design, dynamics, fluid mechanics, and magnetics.
Create detailed mechanical designs using Creo CAD software. Develop prototypes and ensure the designs meet functional, performance, and cost requirements.
Precision engineering including flexure design, kinematic repeatability, optical mounting and thermal management.
Identify opportunities to improve existing products by analyzing performance and reliability, incorporating feedback from production and customer service teams.
Conduct simulations, stress analysis, and physical testing to verify design performance. Ensure designs comply with relevant standards and regulations.
Run test stands and machines, conduct experiments and build engineering prototypes.
Responsible for timely and accurate execution of new product development prototype experiments for mechanical / electrical / thermal / fluid systems.
Utilize sophisticated metrology equipment including laser position measurement equipment, ball-bar motion equipment, rotation measurement equipment, temperature, fluid flow, and fluid pressure measurement devices.
Write concise test reports with justifiable conclusions and recommendations.
Collaborate with external suppliers and vendors to ensure that materials and components meet required specifications.
Communicates frequently with team members. Openly brainstorms with team members.
Stay up to date with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices. Proactively suggest and implement improvements in design processes and tools.

Education and / or Experience – Minimum B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or Technology with 3-5 years of work experience (MS preferred); or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Strong understanding of mechanical systems, materials science, and manufacturing processes. Familiarity with a variety of measurement tools, data acquisition systems and sensors. Experience with Geometrical Dimensioning and Tolerancing methods. Experience with Six Sigma methodologies a plus. Experience with precision engineering, mounting of optics, thermal expansion and flexure design. Familiarity with motion systems as related to mechanical design.
Computer Skills : Effectively uses PTC Creo or other 3D CAD software. Experience with Excel or Mini-Tab to capture, graph, analyze and communicate test data is preferred. Basic word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software skills are required.
Technical - Strong technology perspective particularly related to manufacture of complex machinery (e.g., CNC machines, machine motion, etc.) Proficiency in tolerance analysis, stress analysis, FEA (Finite Element Analysis), and thermal management techniques. Experience with precision engineering, mounting of optics, thermal expansion and flexure design.
Travel – Periodic, infrequent travel may be required. The ability to travel is a requirement for this position. Must have ability to communicate effectively globally.
Salary Range : $71,000-$113,000. The salary offered will be determined by the candidate's education, experience and other qualifications, considering internal equity among current employees with similar skills and experience.
The position is an on-site position located in Rochester, NY.
