The Office of Facilities and Safety in The Grainger College of Engineering seeks qualified applicants for the role of Safety Engineer. This position is responsible for managing health and safety programs for The Grainger College of Engineering and providing risk management guidance and technical support to stakeholders. The position will develop, implement, and manage policies, programs and procedures that promote a safe, responsible and healthful learning and work environment for all Grainger Engineering faculty, staff and students. The incumbent will implement campus safety programs and promote practices to achieve program excellence in an atmosphere of continuous improvement.

Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Assist with the implementation and management of safety programs in Engineering Administration and Integrated Safety and Facility Management (ISFM) units.
  • Participate in safety audits of ISFM units conducted by DRS, Division of Safety and Compliance, and other campus safety departments. Follow up to ensure corrective actions requested by campus-level safety organizations are implemented in a timely manner.
  • Assist ISFM units with addressing safety issues identified in audits or reports by providing ongoing support for corrective actions such as arranging for industrial hygiene monitoring, selecting appropriate control measures, liaising with appropriate vendors for product research, reviewing facility and equipment designs, developing and reviewing standard operating procedures, and providing training.
  • Provide recommendations on the fit-out of new ISFM units spaces, facilities and / or equipment to ensure compliance with health and safety codes and regulations. Identify and communicate facility needs for new and / or existing equipment / procedures.
  • Update the Building Emergency Action Plans (BEAPs) of ISFM units as required by Campus Emergency Management.
  • Participate in safety inspections and audits of ISFM research and instructional spaces including student machine shops, student design spaces and experiential learning activity areas and create follow-up reports with recommended actions.
  • Implement safety programs in ISFM research and instructional spaces.
  • Develop, promote, facilitate, and conduct safety training in-person or online using available Learning Management Systems for ISFM unit students, faculty and staff.
  • Facilitate the creation of SOPs, JSAs, and other safety-related documentation for use in ISFM units research, instruction and daily operations.
  • Assist with the identification and disposal of hazardous materials for ISFM laboratory relocations or close-outs.
  • In line with Campus policies and procedures for student success and engagement in co- and extracurricular activities, support and advise the College Undergraduate Programs Office on the management of risk in registered student organizations (RSO) activities.

Support College units with the implementation of campus-wide Occupational Health and Safety programs and College-level safety initiatives.

  • Inform and advise College units on campus-wide Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) programs including but not limited to Respiratory Protection, Machine Guarding, Crane and Hoist safety, Hearing Conservation, etc.
  • By request, assist College units with hazard identification and risk assessments in research laboratories, instructional laboratories, machine shops, student design and project spaces, offices, and other College facilities for physical, chemical, ergonomic, psychological, and biological hazards, and recommend controls to promote compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, and campus policies, programs, and procedures.
  • Assist in reviewing and analyzing audit findings and incident reports to communicate key performance indicators and identify areas of improvement in safety program performance of College units.
  • Organize workshops, seminars, training sessions, or information campaigns to address gaps in safety knowledge and understanding.
  • Assist with the rollout of the Colleges chemical inventory program.
  • Assist in the operational risk management of College events such as Engineering Open House.
  • Assist with the Colleges Dangerous Goods shipping program.
  • Assist with the development of a Culture of Safety in Grainger Engineering.

  • Communicate safety and health issues to promote a safe, responsible, and healthful work environment for Grainger Engineering faculty, staff and students.
  • Inform and educate the College audience about Federal and State safety regulations and national consensus safety standards.
  • Participate on committees to provide safety expertise.
  • Provide input into safety policy creation and implementation of programs.
  • Assist with gathering information, developing, and updating content in the College Safety website and College-specific safety resources.
  • Other safety duties as assigned.

  • Requires work outside of the typical hours of the standard workday, including evenings and occasional weekends. Travel may be required on occasion. Travel may include nights, weekends, and several days.
  • Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in occupational health and safety, environmental engineering, environmental health, safety engineering, industrial hygiene, or a closely related field.
  • Two (2) years (24 months) of professional work experience in a safety or compliance related field.
  • Demonstrated experience providing occupational safety and health services in construction, manufacturing, wood or metal fabrication, agriculture, public works and / or higher education.
  • Possession of a valid State of Illinois drivers license at the time of hire or within 6 months, which must be maintained throughout the duration of the employment period.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the breadth of OSHA General and Construction Industry standards, with expertise in two or more standards.
  • Experience reading, interpreting and communicating OSHA regulations.
  • Experience in the implementation of OSHA compliant programs throughout large complex organizations with diverse operations, including research operations, instruction, outreach and emergency response.
  • Experience with general requirements of machine guarding.
  • Experience in NFPA 70E and arc-flash training development, delivery and evaluation.
  • Experience in powered industrial truck operator evaluation.
  • Experience in traditional and online training development, delivery and evaluation.
  • Experience in incident investigations.
  • Experience performing hazard assessments and recommending corrective action, including selection of personal protective equipment.
  • Experience in industrial hygiene surveys and data interpretation for selection of proper controls, including local exhaust ventilation and respiratory protection.
  • Preferred Certifications

  • ASP, CSP, CIH, or other nationally recognized certification in occupational safety and health.
  • Authorized OSHA Outreach Trainer for General and Construction industry.
  • Certified or had certification in Transportation of Dangerous Goods (DOT Hazardous Materials and IATA Dangerous Goods classifications).
  • OSHA 10- and / or 30-hour general or construction industry training.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to occasionally work outside the typical hours of the standard workday, including evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to travel on occasion. Travel may include nights, weekends, and several days.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly and concisely to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to learn and disseminate detailed information.

  • Ability to professionally interact with diverse internal and external constituents, including students, faculty, and staff.
  • Knowledge of instructional methods and training techniques, with a basic understanding of how to assess training competency.
  • Proficient in both quantitative and qualitative data analysis skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office or Office 365 apps.
