Job Title : Digital Evidence Technician

Department : Sheriff’s Office

Reports To : Evidence Supervisor

Classification :   Full-Time, Non-Exempt (30 hours per week)

Compensation Range : $26.50 - $30.72 (Based on years of experience, education, or a combination of education and experience.)

  • Position Summary

  • Maintains confidentiality of information consistent with applicable federal, state, and city / county rules and regulations.
  • Maintains the system of identification and retention of all digital media from body-worn cameras.
  • Maintains an inventory of body-worn camera-related hardware.
  • Tracks and completes digital evidence requests received by the department, including utilizing redaction software, in accordance with federal / state statutes and departmental policies.
  • Maintains positive and professional communication with the District Attorney's Office, Defense Attorneys, and the general public.
  • Reviews and edits case files in the department’s Record Management System as it relates to property and evidence.
  • Testifies in court as required.
  • Assists with disposition procedures for all evidence, which includes but is not limited to, data entry (Excel experience helpful), case research, communication with the public, communication with the District Attorney’s Office, review of relevant statutes and policies, and handling of physical evidence.
  • Handling of physical evidence is required, including biohazard material, sharp objects, firearms, heavy objects, and other potentially dangerous materials. Personal protective equipment will be provided.
  • Assists with other Property / Evidence Technician duties as required.
  • The right candidate may show potential to be trained in more advanced duties, including evidence seizure, evidence transfer, introductory forensic analysis, processing search warrants, and responding to other unique situations as they arise.

  • Perform daily duties listed above with accuracy, intense attention to detail, and a high level of ethical responsibility.
  • Ensure all activities are properly documented as needed by statute, policy, and for use in court.
  • Follow the Lake County Sheriff’s Office policy and procedure guidelines as well as the Lake County Employee Handbook.
  • Able to work with limited supervision and think critically about how to solve problems.
  • Handle complaints from citizens and escalate issues to Supervisor if necessary.
  • Perform a range of duties that may involve standing and walking for long periods of time.
  • Able to work in adverse weather conditions, including rain, sleet, hail, and snow – and under extreme time constraints.
  • Maintain strong time management skills to meet deadlines and maintain a manageable work flow.
  • Able to work alone and with minimal guidance or supervision. Be self-motivated and display a good sense of self-initiative.

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Associate or bachelor’s Degree in a relatable preferred.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid Colorado driver’s license, clean criminal record, and clean driver’s record.
  • Ability to pass all required examinations within the testing process, including a physical ability exam, Psychological exam, Polygraph exam, background exam, written and oral exams, and final Sheriff’s interview.
  • Ability to climb, stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, twist, reach, and lift up to 40 lbs.
  • Ability to write, type, and perform other office duties.
  • Read and write the English language with conciseness and understandable vocabulary.
  • Preferred bilingual in English and Spanish.

    Physical Activity & Work Environment

  • Ability to work indoors in an office environment with prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working at a computer.
  • Ability to work indoors in an office environment with prolonged periods of standing and walking while carrying objects.
  • Attend training and seminars as deemed necessary by the Evidence Supervisor.
  • Ability to climb, stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, twist, reach and lift up to 40lbs.
  • Ability dexterity to write, type and perform other office duties.

    Notice of Emergency / Disaster Responsibilities

    All Lake County Employees may be required to work as a Disaster Service Worker when a local declaration of emergency or disaster is declared by the Board of County Commissioners. To be prepared for this role, all employees and emergency service function (ESF) leads will attend emergency management trainings and exercises as requested by the Director of Emergency Management. With advanced notification from OEM, employees will make reasonable efforts to attend training events in coordination with other employees and supervisors.
