Job description

General Description

The Seminole County Sheriffs Office is now accepting applications for DETENTION DEPUTY RECRUIT (SPONSORSHIP) FOR CORRECTIONS.

Detention Deputies perform generalized corrections work in the care custody c ontrol and reentry of sentenced and nonsentenced inmates at the John E. Polk Correctional Facility.

A Detention Deputy is a uniformed officer who is responsible for the care custody control and reentry of sentenced and nonsentenced inmates. As a Detention Deputy your role includes helping provide offenders with the tools necessary to become law abiding citizens upon release. Detention Deputies maintain a consistent routine and demeanor while supervising offenders.

The hourly base salary for this position while in the Corrections academy is $20.00 an hour. A fter completion of the Corrections academy you will receive the starting Detention Deputy salary of $58024 $25.95 per hour) plus the potential for additional holiday pay up to $3425 for those employees who work twelve 12 hour shifts. REQUIRED DOCUMENT

Each applicant must complete a NOTARIZED Background Investigation Waiver . Failure to submit this document will disqualify your application. The waiver must be notarized and submitted with the application. A link for the form has been provided in red above.

Applications must be submitted before the closing date of May 27 2025.

Successful candidates will begin attending the Corrections Academy on August 25 2025 .

Successful candidates will be hired as employees of the Seminole County Sheriffs Office.

Typical Duties

Candidates must sign an agreement with the Seminole County Sheriffs Office.

Candidates selected must fulfill all of the requirements of the academy.

Candidates that fail to complete and / or pass the academy or the State Officer Certification Exam will be required to reimburse the Seminole County Sheriffs Office for all expenses incurred.

Candidates must follow all policy procedures and general orders of the Seminole County Sheriffs Office.

Candidates are required to pass the BAT (Basic Abilities Test) PAT (Physical Abilities Test) and the Civil Service written exam.

Performs all other duties as assigned or required.

Detention Deputies Typical Duties :

  • Supervising inmates to prevent altercations
  • Maintaining accurate count and current location of all inmates
  • Communicating effectively and coherently with other officers and inmates
  • Demonstrating communications skills in court and other formal settings
  • Ensure the cleanliness of the area of assigned responsibility
  • Perform crisis intervention functions to include counseling suicide prevention recognizing abnormal behavior and taking appropriate action
  • Maintain detailed documentation

Minimum Qualifications

  • Applicant must be at least 18 years of age
  • Applicant must be a United States citizen
  • Applicant must have a High School Diploma or GED
  • Selected applicants will be requested to sign an Employment Agreement for a 2year time commitment in position from successful completion of the agencys field training program
  • Applicants who do not successfully complete the academy will be required to reimburse the Sheriffs Office for all expenses incurred up to the last active training date
  • Applicant must possess and maintain a valid Florida Drivers License
  • Upon successful completion of the academy applicants are required to pass the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) state exam
  • Applicant must pass a physical examination with drug screening and a psychological evaluation by a licensed physician
  • All applicants must submit to a thorough background investigation in accordance with FDLE standards
  • All applicants will be required to take a Physical Abilities Test (P.A.T. and Civil Service Written Examination and must achieve a score of 70 or higher in each of the three 3 sections (reading comprehension problem solving and report writing)
  • Internal applicants must have completed the Seminole County Sheriffs Office one 1 year probationary period

    Knowledge Skills Abilities & Other

    Regular and prompt attendance is mandatory in the performance of an employees duties for this position to include schedules work hours and required training activities calls for mandatory overtime needs and call for service during times of an emergency.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    The work environment is generally in a classroom setting detention facility in a Sheriffs Office marked emergency vehicle (depending on job assignment) or in field work environment.

Shift work (days or nights) with rotating days off including working weekends nights holidays and / or overtime; May be required to respond for any critical incident manmade or natural; must be able to appropriately wear and operate a selfcontained breathing apparatus

    External applicants for employment will submit to a thorough background investigation which includes but not limited to past employment / education verification driver license review credit history prior drug use history arrest / conviction record and computerized voice stress analysis (CVSA) testing. A certified examiner administers the CVSA with questions addressing illegal drug use and general questions of honesty and criminal history.     The background investigation process may take 36 months depending upon the complexity of the applicants background and position for which youve applied. Applicants selected for employment will be provided a conditional offer and required to submit to a medical examination with drug screening.
