Chief Estimator

Position Summary :

The Chief Estimator will work under the direct supervision of the VP of Business Development and is responsible for determining cost calculations on behalf of the company in order to complete a project or provide products and services to clients. The Senior Estimators’ role is crucial to the company’s success, as they ensure all materials, transport, labor, and equipment costs have been researched and strategically planned prior to project commencement. Additionally, the Lead Estimator will be responsible for leading a small team of estimators.

Primary Duties / Responsibilities :

• Manage multiple projects concurrently.
• Administration of bidding documents.
• Solicit subcontractors and vendors for quotations on each project in a timely manner.
• Reviewing and understanding of plans and specs.
• Reviewing Addendums.
• Writing detailed scopes of work.
• Accurately evaluate / analyze subcontractor pricing. Research costing of materials, labor, transport, and equipment.
• Quality and material takeoffs.
• Attend pre-bid meetings.
• Compile and send RFI’s.
• Set up project estimates and determine general condition costs.
• Complete the Preconstruction Check List.
• Risk level assessments of each project.
• Communicate and build relationships with architects, engineers, vendors, and customers / clients.
• Creating, updating, and organizing subcontractor and vendor lists.
• Compile, verify, and update unit pricing.
• Review constructability and schedule with Operations.
• Develop cost-saving suggestions for clients.
• Train and develop junior staff members.
• Develop conceptual and budget estimates.
• Other duties assigned.
• Travel as required.

Competency Requirements :

Education :

To successfully perform this position, a high school diploma or GED is required. A degree in Civil Engineering, Accounting, or a related field with a focus on contract tendering, construction, estimating, buying, and quantity surveying is preferred.

Experience :

To successfully perform this position, you should have a minimum of seven years of proven experience in both construction and construction estimation. Gained work experience as an Administrator, Technician, or Surveying Assistant before becoming an Estimator is comparable.
