About this role :

This is a high-visibility opportunity for a Mechanical CAD Designer within our Kidde Business Unit, located in Mebane, NC. This role is dedicated to supporting the Residential Fire Suppression product line, with a primary focus on 3D modeling and 2D engineering documentation using SolidWorks. The ideal candidate will be responsible for creating and maintaining detailed CAD models and drawings, while also leading efforts to automate repetitive tasks, standardize modeling practices, and establish rules for consistent creation of parts, assemblies, and BOMs. This position reports to the Senior Engineering Manager and plays a key role in improving design efficiency and documentation quality across the fire suppression portfolio.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Create and manage detailed 3D models using SolidWorks.
  • Develop and produce precise 2D engineering drawings, including specifications, tolerances, and GD&T annotations.
  • Ensure all designs and drawings comply with Kidde and relevant standards.
  • Configure, implement, and maintain SolidWorks automation tools (macros, design tables, templates) to streamline repetitive tasks.
  • Drive standardization in modeling practices, drawing formats, and CAD documentation.
  • Manage and organize the SolidWorks part and assembly library, ensuring version control and accurate documentation during the ECR process.
  • Collaborate closely with product development teams to meet functional, manufacturability, and cost objectives.
  • Participate in design reviews, prototype development, and the creation of technical documentation.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve design-related issues promptly and effectively.
  • Train and support team members on SolidWorks best practices, automation techniques, and standardization efforts.
  • Maintain and update CAD libraries, engineering documentation (BOMs, assembly instructions), and support continuous improvement initiatives.

Basic Qualifications :

  • Associate degree in Mechanical Design, Drafting, CAD technology or Industrial Design.
  • 3+ years of experience in mechanical design using SolidWorks including 3D modeling and 2D drafting.
  • Preferred Qualifications :

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
  • Strong knowledge of GD&T, tolerance analysis, 2D technical specifications, and relevant standards (ASTM, SAE, ISO).
  • Familiarity with product development processes and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Experience with SolidWorks automation tools such as API, macros, design tables, or configurations.
  • Professional certifications such as Certified SOLIDWORKS Associate (CSWA), Certified SOLIDWORKS Professional (CSWP), or Certified SOLIDWORKS Expert (CSWE) are highly valued.
  • Experience with PDM systems such as Windchill or SolidWorks PDM.
  • Working knowledge of sheet metal, plastic, machined, and mechanical parts.
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes, materials, and design-for-manufacturability (DFM) principles.
  • Exposure to Lean Design, Design for Six Sigma, or similar continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks efficiently.
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills.

  • Compensation and Benefits :

    The base salary range for this role is $91,715 -$107,900. Individuals may also be eligible for an annual performance bonus based on both individual and company’s performance. The final compensation for this position will be set based on the individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience as it relates to the job requirements.
