Job description

Overview

Government & Policy Journalist in Residence (Office of the Dean, SOGP) at Johns Hopkins University. The Journalist in Residence will be embedded at the School of Government for one academic year (2025-26), collaborating with faculty and students to integrate distinguished media practice with academic research, public policy discourse, and curriculum development. The position is open to a start-up style environment within a established university, requiring agility, problem-solving, and the ability to adapt to changing needs.

Responsibilities

  • Public Programming : host flagship events with academics, practitioners, and journalists; organize and facilitate public-facing events; publicly affiliate with the JHU School of Government and Policy in forums, conferences, and media engagements; participate in School webinars, podcasts, and articles; conceive and organize events connecting students and alumni around policy issues.
  • Research Immersion : engage with faculty across economics, political science, sociology, and public health to surface findings for general audiences; collaborate on research projects bridging academic inquiry and real-world governance; contribute to policy initiatives and translate research into policy recommendations and public discourse; lead research collaborations focused on evidence-driven policy analysis and reporting; facilitate faculty workshops on engaging with journalists.
  • Educational Enhancement : advise and develop curriculum or courses providing real-world policy experience and media perspectives; collaborate to design modules with practical case studies and current policy debates; enrich the curriculum by teaching or co-teaching lectures, seminars, and workshops on policy journalism and public discourse; support co-curricular activities for students.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree; five to seven years of experience in journalism, media, or policy communication.
  • Established practitioner or leader with strong journalism experience, with a track record in evidence-driven policy writing and public discourse.
  • Strong ties to journalism and policy communities (local to international) enabling collaboration and enhancing the school’s national and international profile.
  • Experience bridging academic research and public discourse; additional education may substitute for experience per JHU equivalency guidelines.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience addressing evolving governmental, policy, and societal needs; ability to translate evidence-based research into public-facing content.
  • Experience with fellowship program development or newsroom-style mentorship; track record of successful public programming and event hosting.
