About The Position
Position Summary
The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for the decontamination, inspection, assembly, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instruments, medical devices, and equipment throughout the facility. This role ensures that all instruments and supplies are processed safely and efficiently to support patient care and surgical operations.
Key Responsibilities
Decontamination & Cleaning :
Receive, sort, and clean contaminated instruments and equipment using proper infection control procedures.
Operate and maintain washers, ultrasonic cleaners, and sterilizers according to manufacturer specifications.
Inspection & Assembly :
Inspect instruments for cleanliness, functionality, and completeness.
Assemble instrument trays and sets accurately, following count sheets and tray layouts.
Replace or report missing, damaged, or malfunctioning instruments.
Sterilization & Documentation :
Package and label items for sterilization using appropriate wrapping materials and indicators.
Operate autoclaves and low-temperature sterilizers (e.g., STERRAD, gas plasma).
Monitor and record sterilization cycles, biological testing, and quality assurance results.
Distribution & Inventory :
Deliver sterile supplies and trays to surgical suites, nursing units, and procedural areas.
Maintain accurate inventory levels of sterile and non-sterile supplies.
Rotate stock to ensure proper utilization and minimize waste.
Compliance & Safety :
Adhere to infection prevention and hospital safety policies.
Maintain compliance with AAMI, AORN, CDC, and Joint Commission standards.
Participate in ongoing education and competency assessments.
Qualifications
Required :
High school diploma or GED.
Completion of an accredited Sterile Processing Technician or Central Service program.
Knowledge of aseptic technique and infection control practices.
Preferred :
Certification as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) through HSPA or Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) through CBSPD.
At least 1 year of experience in a hospital or surgical setting.
Skills & Competencies
Strong attention to detail and manual dexterity.
Ability to follow written procedures and documentation protocols.
Good communication and teamwork skills.
Familiarity with computerized tracking systems (e.g., CensiTrac, SPM, or T-DOC).
Ability to stand for long periods and lift up to 50 pounds.
