Description :
The Surgical Technologist Certified functions under the direction of the registered professional nurse.
The role assists the health care team in providing safe, age-appropriate, and culturally aware patient care.
The incumbent has the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform duties within the context of moderate to high acuity surgical cases.
There is an expectation to occasionally work above this level as cases require.
This position involves anticipating the needs of the surgeon and other members of the health care team.
The Surgical Technologist exhibits an acquisition of additional surgical skills for progressively more difficult cases.
The role demonstrates an efficient and organized surgical plan for assigned cases.
Proactive discussion of the surgical plan with other members of the health care team is essential.
The ability to troubleshoot instruments and equipment is a key responsibility.
Anticipation of any additional supplies or equipment required for procedures is expected.
Mentoring, precepting, or training in various modalities is part of the role.
Participation in performance improvement initiatives is required.
Duties include :
Preparing the operative suite and surgical field to ensure a safe patient care environment.
Vigilance for the maintenance of the sterile field and other patient safety concerns is essential.
Gathering required instruments and supplies is part of the role, as well as serving as a surgical assistant when needed.
Assisting with inventory, ordering, and stocking is also included.
Ensuring compliance with relevant standards is necessary.
Call or late coverage may be required related to the facility.
Core Responsibilities :
Knowledge and understanding of the procedure being performed is crucial.
Checking supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedures involves reviewing and utilizing appropriate preference cards.
Assisting with room set-up includes opening of sterile supplies.
Setting up sterile tables with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medication / solutions needed for the procedure is expected.
Performing appropriate surgical counts with the circulator is a critical task.
Participating in the procedure pause / time-out is mandatory.
Scrubbing, gowning, and gloving oneself, as well as gowning and gloving the surgeon and assistants, is required.
Assisting in draping the sterile field is a responsibility.
Passing instruments to the surgeon during the procedure is essential while maintaining an organized back table.
High standards of sterile technique must be maintained throughout the procedure.
Preparing sterile dressings is part of the post-operative process.
Cleaning and preparing instruments for terminal sterilization is essential.
Applying principles of asepsis ensures patient safety.
Preparing case carts according to procedure and preference cards is part of the planning process.
Observing patient condition and reporting any changes or significant findings to the physician and registered nurse is required.
Planning for the next steps in case progression is crucial during procedures, especially in emergencies.
Preparing the operating room and other areas involves stocking, cleaning, and turning over the room for patient receiving.
Maintaining financial stewardship related to supplies is important.
