Responsibilities

The Department of Art Education at Florida State University seeks a 12-month Teaching Faculty with an emphasis on clinical experience and community engagement. Along with teaching master’s level art therapy courses, this position will include practicum / internship coordination.

  • Instruction of graduate-level courses in art therapy.
  • Mentoring and advising master’s students.
  • Serving as practicum / internship coordinator
  • Supporting the department chair and program director with accreditation processes.
  • Engaging in meaningful service activities within the university and profession.

Qualifications

  • Academic doctorate or highest level terminal degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate field of specialization, or equivalent qualifications based on professional experience and otherwise qualified to perform assigned duties.
  • Board Certification (ATR-BC) through the Art Therapy Credentials Board.
  • Demonstrated record of clinical art therapy experience.
  • Experience in practicum / internship instruction or supervision.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Licensed or license-eligible in art therapy and / or a related mental health profession.
  • Higher education teaching experience in art therapy.
  • Familiarity with accreditation processes in higher education.

    The graduate art therapy program offers degrees in Master of Science in Art Therapy as well as the Doctor of Philosophy in Art Education, Art Therapy Research and Practice major. The Masters-level program emphasizes a thorough theoretical foundation of art therapy practice and research as well as practicum and internship experiences working within community and clinical settings. The program integrates research-informed practices to foster graduates who understand and apply the power of the visual arts and therapeutic relationships to promote personal and community wellness.

    The Art Therapy Master’s Program , beginning in the 1980’s, is a three-year, two-summer program. It was initially approved by the American Art Therapy Association in 2004 and became accredited through the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) in January 2019. It is the only graduate level art therapy program in the state of Florida, and the only one housed in a state university in the Southeast region. The master’s art therapy program has a highly competitive acceptance rate and attracts students from all over the world.

    The program emphasizes a strong theoretical foundation in art therapy, supported by practicum and internship experiences in education, correctional, community and clinical settings. Students are prepared as practitioners who integrate research-informed approaches and use the power of the visual arts and therapeutic relationships to promote individual and community wellness.
