Description :
A sleep technologist provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders.
This includes in-center and home sleep apnea testing, diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, and comprehensive patient care.
The technologist provides sleep-related education and support to patients and families.
A sleep technologist performs the duties defined for a sleep technician and provides general oversight of other staff.
The technologist documents patient arrival, interactions, and consent for testing.
They review and verify departmental orders for testing and insurance prior authorization verification.
The technologist reviews patient history and supporting documentation for medical necessity.
They acquire and document additional information from the patient or ordering provider as needed.
Routine positive airway pressure interface fitting, desensitization, and education are performed by the technologist.
The technologist prepares patients for testing according to policy, selecting appropriate equipment as per order.
They document routine observations during testing.
Physiologic data and behavioral observations are correlated to facilitate scoring and interpretation of data.
The technologist performs equipment and physiologic calibrations to ensure quality data.
They monitor data quality to ensure recording is artifact-free.
Equipment cleaning and disinfection are performed to assure infection and quality control according to policy.
The technologist demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-specific care for all populations seen.
Appropriate interventions, including patient safety and sleep-related therapeutic interventions, are implemented.
They follow procedures to verify data integrity and completeness of test documentation and patient forms.
Effective working relationships are developed and maintained.
The technologist communicates professionally and respectfully with all customers.
They assist in requesting and maintaining testing supplies.
Participation in routine department tasks and maintaining orderliness of the work area is expected.
Proficiency in distinguishing sleep states and identifying clinical events according to guidelines is necessary.
The sleep technologist scores sleep / wake stages and clinical events using professionally accepted guidelines.
They generate accurate reports by tabulating sleep / wake and clinical event data.
The technologist supports and participates in quality and performance improvement initiatives.
Proficiency in performing ancillary testing such as oximetry and actigraphy is required.
Procedural protocols for Multiple Sleep Latency and Maintenance of Wakefulness Testing are followed.
Documentation of routine observations during testing is required.
The technologist correlates physiologic data and behavioral observations to facilitate scoring and interpretation.
Patient history and supporting documentation are reviewed for medical necessity.
The technologist acquires and documents additional information as needed to ensure the appropriateness of testing and parameters.
Proficiency in ancillary testing and following procedural protocols for sleep testing is expected.
