Overview

General Description : Dedicated Paramedic that performs emergency response activities including rescue, driving emergency response vehicles; responsible for response locations and traffic control devices while providing for the safety of other vehicles, pedestrians and fire personnel. Additionally, performs Advanced life support functions as detailed below.

Work Environment : Fire station environment with emergency situations requiring quick response. Work involves considerable physical exertion and potential risk.

Reporting Structure : Reports to Industrial Fire & Rescue Station Manager

Responsibilities

Emergent Medical Operations :

A Paramedic shall :

  • Demonstrate the ability to be effective, safe and efficient during fire ground operations in accordance with department training and standard operating guidelines throughout their career.
  • Operate as an effective team member and follow the direction of an officer when given. Team operations are an important component of firefighting work. Reliance on each team member is paramount to safe and effective operations.
  • Wear safety equipment issued such as Personal Protective Equipment, (PPE), (turn out gear and all associated items) when applicable according to department guidelines.
  • Be capable of performing independent tasks when directed without close supervision within the scope of their training.

Emergent EMS Operations :

A Paramedic shall :

  • Operate effectively and safely as the Paramedic in charge or as a team member.
  • Demonstrate patient assessment and treatment skills to the standard of care accepted in the state of Mississippi in accordance with department protocols.
  • Wear appropriate safety and PPE per department and regional guidelines.
  • Drive / operate vehicles following guidelines established by State Law, policy and the department. Safe vehicle operation is a significant responsibility of the employee.
  • Exercise care, accuracy and completeness in documenting patient care reports and any other associated items.
  • Emergency Scene working relations and communications :

    A Paramedic shall :

  • Communicate over radio frequencies in a manner that is professional and following departmental standard operating guidelines. Understanding proper radio communications is an essential skill for scene operations.
  • Effectively and safely function as a team member. Composure must be maintained so that actions do not compromise the other members and or the public.
  • Non-Emergent operations

    Operation and Maintenance of Vehicles, Equipment and Stations

    A Paramedic shall :

  • Be capable of identifying, investigating and then reporting any problems or deficiencies to an immediate supervisor.
  • Be cognizant of departmental guidelines to report such problems or deficiencies to the proper authority, including supervisors, staff officers and vehicle maintenance division if applicable.
  • Be capable of independent work involving the proper check, maintenance and cleaning of department apparatus, equipment or stations following department guidelines.
  • Demonstrate thorough knowledge of all equipment operations and show proficiency in the use of that equipment during inspections and training.
  • Fitness / Wellness and Appearance

    A Paramedic shall :

  • Pass pre-employment physical.
  • Complete annual medical evaluation within specified time frame, if so assigned.
  • Maintain assigned personal protective equipment in good order / repair and promptly advise the immediate supervisor of any deficiencies. Advise immediate supervisor if any equipment is lost.
  • Maintain a professional appearance in their daily uniform. Maintain uniforms and request replacements for items in poor condition.
  • Working Relations / Communication

    A Paramedic shall :

  • Demonstrate an ability to work well with others and perform as a team member.
  • Display and promote a positive work / mental attitude while on the job.
  • Demonstrate good verbal and written communication skills and continually show respect and courtesy in those communications.
  • Follow department procedures when offering suggestions and seeking answers through the chain of command.
  • Be capable of independent work involving daily duties and assignments as defined in department guidelines. This includes completing said tasks in a timely manner and with little supervision.
  • Daily Work Schedule and Duty

    A Paramedic shall :

  • Report for duty on time when assigned. The assigned shift could be at night or in the day, for 24 hours or for 12 hours, including holidays and weekends.
  • Be prepared for duty at the start of shift including being in uniform and getting their equipment ready by their assigned vehicle.
  • Safety Awareness and Responsibility

    A Paramedic shall :

  • Perform given tasks in a safe manner with injury prevention foremost at all times.
  • Display an appropriate recognition of safety and safe operations by using PPE in all emergent and non-emergent situations.
  • Recognize report and correct when applicable safety hazards in and around the workplace / station.
  • Perform training activities in a safe manner, request or offer assistance to others in order to prevent injury.
  • General Physical Capabilities and abilities :

  • Ability to perform physically demanding work while wearing positive pressure breathing equipment during emergencies and training.

  • Must be able to rely on senses of sight, hearing, smell, and touch to help determine the nature of the emergency, maintain personal safety, and make critical decisions in a confused, chaotic and potentially life-threatening environment throughout the duration of the operation.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is also required to stand, walk, run, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; and taste or smell.
  • The employee must frequently lift and / or move more than 100 pounds.
  • Work Environment

    The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside

    weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and / or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, except during certain emergency activities when noise may be loud, however precautions and equipment are provided to minimize exposure.

    Qualifications

    Qualifications

  • Paramedic Certification and National Registry;
  • Mississippi Paramedic Certification (or obtain prior to start)
  • Current Certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Basic Life Support (BLS), Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS or equivalent);
  • Ability to work under pressure and stay calm in emergency situations;
  • Knowledge of emergency medical procedures and protocols;
  • Excellent physical condition and stamina;
  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • Valid and unrestricted driver's license;
  • Paramedic Experience Requirements

  • 2 + years' experience as a paramedic
  • NOTE : This station will open as a private service business. Following on or about one year of operational service, actions will be pursued to make this a public service station within Lowndes County. If / when the station transitions to a public entity, employment within the station, and the associated compensation and benefits structure, will not be guaranteed for continuance.
