Department Summary

UCLA Film & Television Archive, a department of the UCLA Library, collects moving images as works of art and as social and historical documents, restores and preserves moving images for current and future generations, curates collections, programs and events using moving images to advance knowledge, and provides access to moving images for purposes of research, education and enjoyment.

The Archive's collections consist of over 520,000 holdings dating from the dawn of cinema to the present and cover a broad-spectrum of content from major Hollywood studios films and network television shows to independent productions, documentaries, theatrical newsreels and television newsfilms.

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Archive Research and Study Center Officer, the Research & Public Access Coordinator (RPAC) plays a key role in advancing the UCLA Library's mission by facilitating research, teaching, and public engagement through increased access to the Archive's moving image collections. Working within the Archive Research and Study Center (ARSC), the RPAC coordinates efforts that integrate research services with campus-facing programming. The RPAC manages major ARSC initiatives, including the Artist-in-Residence program, the Obsolete Media Workshops, the UCLA / Academy Fellowships, and student research awards-ensuring these programs align with teaching and research priorities across disciplines. The RPAC develops learning tools and online resources, such as Collection Profiles and Library Guides, to promote the use of Archive collections in instruction and scholarship, and creates online modules for integration into the university's course management system. The RPAC also plays a key role in public engagement by helping to shape film and media programs that highlight Library collections and academic work. Responsibilities include researching and securing film and media materials, coordinating loans and permissions from external partners, and ensuring legal and logistical fulfillment. The RPAC frequently represents the Archive at public events, introducing programs, moderating discussions, and cultivating relationships with community and campus partners. In carrying out these responsibilities, the RPAC exercises broad coordination across the Archive and Library. The position collaborates with curators, preservation staff, and communications teams to plan projects, track outreach efforts, and ensure consistency across initiatives. The RPAC manages administrative workflows for key programming and research activities, including budget tracking, vendor payments, and guest travel arrangements. The position also provides guidance to students, interns, and visiting researchers engaged in access or program-related work. Through a combination of subject expertise, specialized technical knowledge, and coordination across multiple functional areas, the RPAC ensures that the Archive's moving image collections are actively used to advance the Library's goals in research, teaching, and public service.

Salary & Compensation

  • UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Salary offers at the top of the range are not common. Qualifications

  • Experience working in public presentation settings, including coordinating artist and scholarly output. (Required)
  • Demonstrated experience in writing and communication (Required)
  • Experience with time management and coordinating of film events and productions. (Required)
  • 1. Experience with academic scholarship and publishing and knowledge of and strong interest in American and international cinema, film and television history, practice and criticism. (Required)
  • 2. Skill in using standard bibliographic and filmographic reference sources. (Required)
  • 3. Working knowledge of current policies and procedures accepted and used by the media community in the areas of public programming and exhibition. (Required)
  • 4. Skill in editing and proofreading written materials for accuracy, style, content, grammar, spelling and punctuation. (Required)
  • 5. Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal direction to maintain workflow with changing priorities, frequent interruptions, and conflicting deadlines. (Required)
  • 6. Skill in exercising a high level of judgment in prioritizing the calendar for individual and group meetings and / or events. (Required)
  • 7. Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment, initiative, and resourcefulness in identifying and solving problems and making decisions quickly and efficiently. (Required)
  • 8. Interpersonal skills to work cooperatively and effectively with project team including Archive units in Research & Education, Public Programming, Library Business Office, Cinema and Media Studies Department, TFT. (Required)
  • 9. Ability to take direction from supervisor and execute assigned tasks accurately and in a timely fashion. (Required)
  • 10. Interpersonal skill to deal effectively with media artists, filmmakers, industry and press personnel from a variety of economic, cultural, professional and national backgrounds.

  • 11. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Excel and Google Suite; proficiency with Zoom or other video conferencing applications. (Required)
  • 12. Ability to use mathematical skills sufficiently to compute and summarize numbers and verify the accuracy of financial reports and invoices. creating visual reports based on financial or other data. (Required)
  • Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations

  • Degree in Film / Media and / or Archival Studies, or equivalent education (Preferred)
