Kings View is a nonprofit leader in providing behavioral health services to the underserved community, is currently seeking a driven  Peer Support Specialist I  to join our mission to provide compassionate services to those with limited resources. Peer Support Specialist I (PSSI) works in cooperation with the program manager and the wellness center team to support the daily operations of the wellness center and perform all necessary documentation, in a timely manner. The role of the PSSI is to provide direct client services in accordance with the values and ethics of peer support. The PSSI will model the healthy application of strategies that support mental health and emotional regulation, while practicing and maintaining professional boundaries.  The PSSI will provide support for consumers, interns, and volunteers at the center, on community outings and public events.

How will I contribute

  • Provide direct advocacy and support to consumers as they navigate their wellness and recovery journeys.
  • Serve as a positive role model by sharing lived experience, offering encouragement, support, and understanding.
  • Assist in developing consumer-driven wellness and recovery plans in collaboration with experienced staff.
  • Co-facilitate groups, classes, and activities on- and off-site to support consumer engagement and build facilitation skills.
  • Provide daily transportation for consumers to and from the facility, appointments, and community activities.
  • Support consumers in creating action plans, safety agreements, post-crisis planning, and psychiatric advance directives (PADs).
  • Offer referrals and advocate for consumers to help them access needed services and resources.
  • Provide community education on wellness and recovery principles and practices.
  • Support volunteers and interns as needed in program activities and events.
  • Interact with staff, consumers, and the public in a respectful, professional, and helpful manner to promote positive relationships and collaboration.
  • Participate in required training and development opportunities to strengthen service delivery skills.
  • Work closely with supervisors and senior staff to build capacity for greater responsibility and independence in the role.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the overall functioning and success of the program.

May encounter risk of working with persons with SMI (serious mental illness) that may include, but not limited to persons in mental health crisis, persons that may be intoxicated or impaired by drugs or alcohol, persons who may be DTO (danger to others), DTS (Danger to Self), or GD (Gravely Disabled). If such situations arise, staff will be required to call local emergency personnel to help deescalate the crisis, use crisis intervention techniques, and consult with supervisor as soon as practically possible.

What I bring

  • High School Diploma (or Equivalent)
  • Class C driver's license
  • 1 year in peer work or completion of a peer training program or certificate of completion for WRAP Seminar I or certificate of completion for Taking Action for Whole Health and Wellbeing Seminar I
  • Knowledge of the philosophy and goals of program assigned; common practices and procedures in wellness and recovery; knowledge of best practices in peer support; knowledge of expectations relating to professional boundaries needed in peer work.
  • Take personal responsibility to practice strategies and work-life balance necessary to maintain personal wellness. Communicate effectively with consumers and co-workers. Work comfortably with a variety of diversly-abled people.
  • Must have lived experience with mental health and / or substance use recovery, including, but not limited to, mental illness, addiction, foster care, high ACE’s score, trauma, intimate partner violence, homelessness, and neurodivergence.
