Description

Walla Walla Community College (WWCC) is seeking applicants for a full-time, tenure-track Librarian at the Walla Walla campus. The start date is at the beginning / during the Fall quarter in September 2025.

General Description :

We seek a learner-centered, proactive, and innovative librarian to provide general and specialized instruction and reference services. Major responsibilities include course-related information literacy instruction in multiple modalities including face to face and virtual environments and utilizing eLearning tools (LMS, Panapto, etc.); in-person and virtual reference service; development of print and web-based (such as LibGuides) research and instructional materials; consultation with faculty to support their research and course development; and participation in collection development efforts and the co-lead college Open Educational Efforts.

All librarians perform multiple roles including public service, patron instruction, and coordination of an assigned operational area, (this position will coordinate information discovery and systems for the WWCC Library.), as well as other professional responsibilities within the library and the college. Collaboration with colleagues in planning, delivering, and evaluating the library's information literacy instruction program, collection development, and reference services is an essential aspect of each library faculty member.

In addition, this position will take a lead role in managing library digital collections and services in support of the library's learner-centered mission. This position will support the implementation and administration of existing and emerging technologies that enhance the leaner's experience and engagement within the library and across the curriculum. Equity is core to our work and as such, this position will also promote and manage digital services (eResources and library website for example) to achieve a positive information discovery and engagement experience by ensuring maximum visibility, accessibility and usability for our campus community. The person in this position will also collaborate closely with the library's Open Educational Resource coordinator on the creation, adoption, or 're-mixing' of open educational resources.

Tenure-track faculty are expected to participate in professional service activities and pursue meaningful professional development that supports their currency and continued growth in their professional field and ability to advance best practices in student learning. Faculty Librarians demonstrate initiative, leadership, and the ability to work both independently and as an integral member of the library team and shares a commitment to creating a welcoming, supportive environment for students, faculty, staff, and other library users.

Essential Functions :

Information Literacy

Assumes a proactive role in creating information-literacy focused learning opportunities and experiences in WWCC's myriad academic and work force programs. This includes planning, teaching, and assessing information literacy and related instruction, for credit-bearing courses and individual teaching sessions developed in collaboration with discipline faculty to provide such instruction.

  • Contributes to a growing information literacy instruction program that serves students in a wide array of information literacy needs and levels in face to face, hybrid, and online environments
  • Works strategically with partners in the library and across campus to plan and integrate instructional programming that furthers the educational mission of the library and WWCC.
  • Employs instructional strategies and resources (such as Canvas and LibGuides) that create inclusive and accessible learning environments
  • Develops and measures meaningful instructional outcomes that are aligned with professional and institutional standards
  • Assesses programming in support of student success
  • Enhances library instruction to meet the needs of the evolving educational landscape, including potential services and resources for distance education students
  • Encourage and support lifelong learning, metacognition, and metaliteracy

Reference

Consistent with the library's teaching mission, Faculty Librarians provide learner-centered reference and research services, including information literacy skill development, appropriate resource use, and developing print and online instructional materials and tutorials.

  • Provide college-level, teaching inspired research consultation services that assist students in locating, using, and evaluating resources appropriate to their information need and level
  • Provide research consultation services to faculty and staff through individual or departmental meetings, and / or via in-person or virtual workshop sessions
  • Provide various forms of 'e-reference' including e-mail and online chat services
  • Discovery and Systems

    This position will serve as the primary contact and coordinator for Library Discovery and Systems.

  • Serves as discovery systems coordinator for the library
  • Works collaboratively with faculty and staff to evaluate the library's online resource discovery environment and to develop and implement strategies and innovative solutions to improve learner experiences and engagement.
  • Engages in cross-departmental relations, such as eLearning, to facilitate access and usage to the library's virtual presence.
  • Compiles statistical and usage reports for Library eResources
  • Occasionally assist with original and complex copy cataloging in a variety of formats for the library collections according to national, shared system, and local standards;
  • Engages and supports faculty and staff in the use of new technology applications, systems, and learning tools.
  • Assumes a lead role in maintaining the library website.
  • Collection Development

  • Participate in collection development activities, including recommendations for print and electronic resources, maintaining collection currency, providing for curriculum revisions and relevant accreditation standards
  • Ensures an inclusive approach to materials selection that addresses collection gaps and in particular underrepresented and historically marginalized populations (e.g., students with disabilities, students of color, first-generation college students, LGBTQIA, veterans, English language learners, etc.)
  • Utilizes appropriate evaluation tools for selection and deselection of resources
  • Professional Service to the College

  • Contribute to the mission and goals of the college as a member of the campus community and as a professional librarian is an essential role of this position.
  • Participate in the process of shared governance by contributing to the academic community through committee work in the program area, college or district levels, or participate in other significant non-classroom college, district, or community activities
  • Actively participate in college-wide or general faculty functions in relation to the educational program, in-service programs, and professional development
  • Support the planning and implementation of the library's outreach and student engagement activities
  • Develop and maintain sustainable partnerships with campus organizations geared toward student engagement
  • Professional Development

    Remaining current and responsive to the constantly evolving professional landscape and learning experiences of our students is an essential component of this position.

  • Participate in professional development activities to remain current in skills and knowledge as they relate to core aspects of librarianship and student learning
  • Engage in professional development, service, and research activities that improve professional practice at a level consistent with expected progress toward achieving tenure
  • Mentorship, training, and other professional development opportunities are available, encouraged, and expected to be sought out in order to advance one's professional practice
  • 'Reverse mentoring' - sharing professional development experiences, peer reviewed initiatives, and lessons learned - is encouraged and expected
  • Additional Responsibilities

  • Regularly attend and participate in departmental meetings
  • Participate in other advisory committee meetings when required
  • Provide recommendations for purchasing of new technologies, instructional supplies, equipment, and other program support
  • On occasion may provide direct support of daily operations including circulation desk functions and following established opening and closing procedures
  • Supports and promote WWCC Library's mission, shared vision, and values

  • Required Qualifications :

    Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered at the discretion of the college.

  • MLIS degree from an ALA-accredited program (or equivalent)
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience in a faculty level role at an academic library.
  • Demonstrated commitment to providing excellent service and working collaboratively with faculty and staff; experience related to information literacy instruction, reference, and research support in a variety of modalities; strong knowledge of print and digital information resources; demonstrated commitment to a student-centered teaching philosophy; excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work independently and collaboratively; and strong commitment to diversity, equity, respect and inclusion.

    Conditions / Terms of Employment

    This is a full-time tenure-track position exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Faculty terms and conditions of employment are negotiated with their exclusive bargaining representative, the Association for Higher Education.     Persons hired must be able to provide acceptable documentation of lawful authorization to work in the United States within three (3) days of employment and official college transcripts. WWCC participates in E-Verify and will provide the federal government with your Form I-9 information to confirm that you are authorized to work in the U.S. Candidates will be subject to a criminal history background check as a condition for consideration of employment. Information from the background check may not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform in the position. The College is a tobacco-free campus.

    Compensation :

    The College has a negotiated faculty salary schedule. Employee placement on the schedule is determined by education level and experience. Salary is dependent on the number of days of the contract and the candidate's placement on the negotiated faculty salary schedule. Initial placement is generally $81,330 - $92,718 for a standard 196-day contract, dependent on qualifications (additional compensation for doctorate degree. The College has a comprehensive faculty benefit program including medical, dental, life, and long-term disability insurance; paid sick leave; and retirement and two optional deferred compensation programs. All full-time employees will automatically have 3% of taxable income deferred into the State of Washington Deferred Compensation Program (DCP). The college also supports faculty professional development. Walla Walla Community College requires all employees to participate in direct deposit for payment of salary.
