Job Description

Job Description

We are seeking a culturally fluent, creatively sharp, and taste driven Editorial Director to lead the full creative and content strategy for Overheard, one of Doing Things’ most iconic and socially native brands. In this role, you will shape the voice, tone, and execution of all Overheard content — across static, video, branded programs, and emerging formats — ensuring the franchise remains culturally relevant, high-performing, premium, and unmistakably “Overheard.”

This role requires a visionary editorial leader who deeply understands internet culture, humor, social content formats, and the nuances of short-form storytelling. As Editorial Director, you will manage the Editorial team, partner closely with Creative, Production, and Brand Partnerships, and drive the creative decisions that define Overheard’s presence across platforms.

You will be responsible for developing content strategies, setting the editorial agenda, guiding content creation, and maintaining the brand’s voice at scale. You are a leader, a tastemaker, a storyteller, and a creative problem solver who can translate cultural moments into highly engaging Overheard content.

This role reports into the VP of Overheard. We are prioritizing candidates in the New York City area (hybrid), but may also be based in the Los Angeles Area (remote).

Responsibilities

Editorial Leadership & Content Strategy

  • Set and execute the overarching content strategy for Overheard across platforms
  • Define and maintain Overheard’s voice, tone, and editorial POV across static posts, video formats, and branded content
  • Identify high-impact topics, formats, and cultural hooks that Overheard should cover and determine how they come to life
  • Shape a long-term editorial roadmap that aligns with brand objectives and audience growth goals
Team Management & Creative Direction
  • Lead, mentor, and manage the Editorial team, ensuring output is high-quality, fast-moving, and strategically aligned
  • Provide direction on static post ideation, caption writing, narrative framing, and video concept creation
  • Guide video development alongside production leads — shaping idea generation, scripting, and execution
  • Support team development with clarity on roles, expectations, feedback loops, and growth paths
Social Video & Platform Strategy
  • Serve as an expert in short-form and social-first video storytelling across TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube.
  • Develop video concepts in collaboration with Production and Creative
  • Identify new visual trends, editing styles, and narrative formats to evolve Overheard’s creative identity
  • Ensure content remains platform-native and optimized for performance
Trend Forecasting & Cultural Awareness
  • Maintain a strong pulse on cultural moments, viral conversations, lifestyle trends, humor, and emerging internet behaviors
  • Quickly identify opportunities for real-time content that aligns with Overheard’s voice
  • Filter cultural signals into editorial decisions and creative direction
Content Calendar Ownership
  • Build and oversee the full editorial content calendar across all Overheard properties
  • Ensure programming covers all brand priorities, aligns with tentpole moments, and drives audience engagement
  • Work cross-functionally to coordinate branded content slots and campaign needs
Brand Voice & Quality Control
  • Review and approve all editorial output (static and video) for voice, accuracy, and creative quality
  • Ensure consistency and cohesion across multiple Overheard pages and formats
  • Maintain creative excellence while evolving the brand as platforms and audience taste shift
Branded Content Collaboration
  • Serve as the editorial counterpart to Brand Partnerships on Overheard campaigns
  • Alongside the Associate Creative Director, guide the development of branded content concepts that feel authentic to Overheard
  • Ensure branded deliverables meet both client expectations and Overheard’s creative standards
Data & Performance Insight Integration
  • Partner with the Data team to review content performance, identify learnings, and adjust strategy
  • Use insights to inform content decisions, test new formats, and optimize editorial output
  • Present editorial insights and recommendations to leadership as needed

Qualifications

  • 6–10+ years of editorial, content, or social media leadership experience (publisher, digital media, entertainment, or social-first brand preferred)
  • Deep understanding of short-form video, social content formats, and the evolving social ecosystem
  • Strong editorial judgment and ability to shape storylines, memes, and video concepts for high engagement
  • Demonstrated experience managing a fast-paced creative or editorial team
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills with mastery of tone and brand voice
  • Highly attuned to culture, humor, lifestyle trends, and internet-native storytelling
  • Strong collaboration skills across Production, Creative, Sales, and Data
  • Ability to balance speed with quality, and creative innovation with brand consistency
  • Organized, decisive, proactive, and able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously
  • A deep love for the Overheard brand, the Doing Things editorial universe, and the broader cultural landscape
